PESHAWAR: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan on Sunday defended the allocation of Rs300 million for the Darul Uloom Haqqania and said that over two million children are studying in religious seminaries and they have the right over government funds to be used for their education on modern lines enabling them to compete in the modern world.

Addressing a press conference at the Chief Minster’s House, the PTI chief said that about 2.2 million children studying in different madrassas deserved to be educated in contemporary disciplines and the government needs to reform these institutions in the country.

The PTI government, he said, started this reform initiative from the Darul Uloom Haqqania for which the amount in question has been allocated. He said only eight lakh children are studying in English medium schools while the seminaries are accommodating 22 million children which justify the allocation of funds to reform these institutions.

It is to be mentioned here that the PTI-led coalition government in its budget for the next fiscal allocated Rs300 million to religious seminary Darul Uloom Haqqania located in Akora Khattak, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Responding to a question, Imran Khan clarified that allocation of Rs300 million for the Darul Uloom was part of the National Action Plan (NAP) to bring the religious seminaries into mainstream.

He said the provincial government has started this initiative from Darul Uloom Haqqania and the amount is **t a grant, rather it is an allocation aimed at bringing the seminary into the mainstream by reforming its total system. He said the provincial government would monitor the spending the of the amount under which computers and other equipment would be provided to it and the high school locating on the premises of the madrassa would be upgraded to the level of college.

The PTI chief said that even in Musharraf's era a programme to reform the seminaries was launched, but the plan could **t be materialised. He said the provincial government has taken the lead and initiated the plan to reform madrassas in the province.

Flanked by Chief Minister Pervaiz Khattak and others, the PTI chief said that Maulana Fazlur Rehman's party in its time also gave donations to madrassas, but today he is making hue and cry on the allocation of funds to these institutions for reforms.

About the resignation and subsequent allegations of the former chairman Board of Directors (BOD) of the Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organisation (Pedo), Shakeel Durrani, Imran said the senior bureaucrat was brought in for development of the sector, but he turned out to be a hurdle in the way of the development of the power and energy sector.

However, about the corruption allegations, he said Minister for Power and Energy Atif Khan would defend the same in the court of law. To a**ther question about rumours regarding the in-house change in the provincial assembly to replace Pervaiz Khattak, he said, "Pervez Khattak is **t wasting the state money on his own publicity like Sharif brothers do."

He said the health budget has been increased to Rs25 billion from Rs8 billion and soon all the big hospitals in the province would be under independent boards. He also appealed the High Court to dispose of the stay order in this regard so that the provincial government could move on with its health reforms agenda.

Imran declined to comment on the remarks of Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid who criticised PTI chief for launching anti-Nawaz movement. However, he referred to the shopping of the prime minster in London and said to keep Nawaz Sharif in Pakistan the Herald Store would have to be built in the country.
