Responsible political leadership does **t act in manners, especially during its visits to the foreign countries, to tarnish the image of the country especially in the realm of foreign affairs. Instead, it capitalises on it by way of promoting the country and its image. Those political parties who embolden their workers to protests against the leaders of each other political parties in foreign countries can**t be treated on the right side of the equation and should be accused of the culpability of defaming the country. They get ample opportunities to vent their spleen back home under the democratic system. They should desist from engaging in such useless and worthless practice of undermining their own country they are supposed to serve. Generally, they do **t get tired of boasting their commitment pointing to the promising future for the countrymen in their domestic politicking. But, their petty politics abroad defies their commitment to the dismay of all the countrymen.
But, former President, Asif Ali Zardari, is the leader of the type who will always conduct himself in mature and responsible manners while keeping the national interest in the foremost whether he is in Pakistan or more so when he is abroad. The latest timely initiative of him meeting the prominent lawmakers of the US Congress with the purpose of convincing them the supply of F-16 fighter planes to Pakistan was absolutely critical to defeat the scourge of terrorism and also to consolidate the gains so for achieved under the Zarb-e-Azb. It was the physical manifestation of his leadership that served the national interests without caring the considerations of political divide. His initiative gets added significance in the face of Adviser on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz’s recent statement in which he alluded that Hussain Haqqani was playing an active role at the Capitol Hill against Pakistan’s interests. PPP co- chairman’s meetings with the important people in Washington are surely going to make qualitative difference in favour of Pakistan. That is national politics indeed propelled by the narrative of promoting the national interests while domestic politics may take its own course.
The appeal of Khawaja Saad Rafiq, PML-N leader, to the co-chairman was **t misplaced when he requested him to play his leadership role to stem the dangers to democracy. He was under ** doubt that his wisdom and poli6tical foresight was quite capable of steering the country out of the crisis it was going to be embroiled in after the holy month of Ramazan. Some of the opposition parties have threatened to launch mass movement against the government. It seemed certain that sit-in politics would revisit the country permeating e**ugh laughing stock among the international community and to our enemies’ immense schadenfreude emanating from our naivety. This questioned the legitimacy of the confrontational politics when country was facing the credible existential threat. Dr Tahirul Qadri is in the country to throw the spanner in the works for which he is very well k**wn among the serious and country loving circles of the civil society. He is fond of keeping the government of the day his hostage through his captive supporters who are mostly employees of his organisations.
Pakistani politicians, barring couple of exceptions, are infatuated with vendetta and trivial considerations of party/power politics at the expense of the national politics. Their sense of objectivity is grossly blurred and only focused to the tree rather than on the forest, eyeing on parochial interests rather than on the collective one. Pakistan has been facing grave situation both internally and externally and yet they are **t hesitant in pulling each other’s hair providing pitiable comic relief to the international community at our cost. It will **t be a bid of an exaggeration to infer that they are facilitating the culmination of the agenda of the enemy of the country, may be **t by design but certainly by default.
In the presence of such self-serving politicians there is ** need for the sworn enemies to engineer the infliction of trepidation on the nation. Unwise politicians are e**ugh to do the hostile camp’s bidding leading to the melancholic destiny of Greek tragedy. What a pitiable de**uement?
The rational utterance of the Opposition Leader Syed Khurshid Shah is very reassuring to the people of the country. While underscoring the importance of the investigations of the PanamaLeaks he also made it clear in the recent Geo TV interview that PPP would pull the plug out from the opposition platform if it felt the derailment of democracy would be precipitated if PPP did **t spring into action to salvage it. The PPP will **t allow the anti-democratic forces to succeed yet again in stripping off the dreams of the people of Pakistan who have developed acute appetite of leading their collective and individual lives under the democratic dispensation which indeed is the spirit of the Pakistan struggle for independence.
It makes sense because the PPP, its leadership and workers had nurtured democracy with their blood and therefore they could **t afford to even imagine letting their blood go waste. It was beyond comprehension that the PPP would join hands with those who were hell bound to enter the corridor of power regardless of the nature of the system and the legitimacy of the means to grab power. The PPP can**t support those who are bent upon getting the power by hook or crook at the cost of democracy. PPP’s anatomy is quite at variance with them because it considers people of Pakistan as the source of power, **t the barrel of gun. PPP had the singular distinction of always assuming the reign of the country through ballot **t bullet. The commitment of PPP in the politics of vote is unflinching and will remain so for all times to come. The PPP never contemplated to come to the power through the crutches of Establishment and its track record in this count is totally unblemished. The history of the other political parties in this regard is least enviable because it is stained with black spots of seizing power through connivance.
The incumbent political leadership must avoid confrontational politics for its own sake because of its inevitable devastating consequences. Political history of this country bears witness to the indispensability. They must learn from the history. Those who refuse to learn from the history they become history rather making the history. The repetition of confrontational politics will inexorably strengthen the perception that they have **t learnt from the history. Their visible obstinacy is indeed devoid of requisite maturity and equanimity. In politics, zero sum game is the negation of the ethos of the democratic politics. It excessively favours intense consultations aimed at accommodating the points of view of the other side. It shouldalways be pursued on the fundamental principle of give and take because the narrative of total victory and its boasting cut the government and other side off their knees making it almost impossible to find convergence to proceed in the matter in the positive and result-oriented direction.
The standoff is generally resolved by the democratic minds because its longevity for longer period of time is **t sustainable as dynamics of politics are bound to overtake it sooner than later. The politicians who understand its dynamics certainly try to create pathways out of the situation to resolve the stalemate k**wing it as the only way to save the country from sinking in the vicious cycle of royal mess. Those who are averse to this discourse of getting rid of the predicaments pave the way of meeting the ill-fate only to repent later like defeated mindset. Holding maximal positions generates e**ugh acrimony to spoil the chances of building bridges and increases the same for erecting the walls instead.
Politics in Pakistan is heading towards the lamentable conclusion unfortunately. Politicians are **t budging and rather digging in heels to the frustration of the people who want that the political system must remain on the democratic trajectory because their dream of stronger, prosperous, stable and peaceful Pakistan can only come true under the democratic dispensation. Their bitter and experience based assessment emanates from the successive dictatorships, each proved bigger disaster than the earlier one **twithstanding causing irreparable losses to the federation and its territorial integrity besides the scourge of extremism and terrorism. All these horrendous aftermaths are their despicable legacies.
Pleasantly, the latest survey conducted in the country clearly shows the overwhelming preference of the people for democratic system in the country. It did **t cause surprise here because democracy had been becoming increasingly popular around the world because of its compatibility with the aspirations of the people. Dictators all over the world had left the legacies those were invariably immersed with ****** of abhorrent incidents of suppression and persecutions. The countries those got rid of autocrats and accepted democracy as the way of life had made significant strides in all walks of national life on sustainable basis. The examples of Turkey, Malaysia, Indonesia, Argentina, Brazil and other host of countries give credence to the suitability of democracy as the ultimate way of political life. All other models had failed in the world and so in Pakistan. Better to guard it religiously.
