WASHINGTON: A senior member of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee has praised the Nuclear Suppliers Group for refraining from allowing Indian participation in the group.

In a statement issued yesterday, Senator Edward Markey said that if India joined the Nuclear Supplier Group, it would be the only participating government in the organisation that was **t a party to the NPT, weakening the NSG’s commitment to the treaty. “By refraining from admitting India, the NSG strengthened both the treaty and the broader global **nproliferation regime.’’

He reminded that the Nuclear Supplier Group was founded in response to India's 1974 nuclear test, and it has worked for decades to prevent the sharing of tech**logy that could contribute to the further spread of nuclear *******.

India had sought to join the NSG despite clear guidelines that only members of the Nuclear **n-Proliferation Treaty should be considered for NSG participation. Yet, the Obama administration was willing to overlook the qualification criteria and supported India’s wishes to join the group.

Senator Markey had previously spoken out against plans to set aside these rules for India and at a hearing in May strongly demanded that India should halt fissile material
production. He had said that
if India ended up in the
NSG then it will be the only participating government that is **t party to NPT and does **t have full scope of IAEA safeguards.

At the hearing, the senator also criticised the Obama administration’s policy towards India and had said that unfortunately, the US has repeatedly carved out exemptions for India. He had recalled that the US had supplied Uranium to India in 1980; followed by 2008 waiver by the NSG without making India accepting full scope of safeguards.

Back then the senator had warned India to follow the international safeguards before its admitted to the NSG.

The senator was of the view that the policy of giving exemptions started a dangers escalation cycle since Pakistan warned the World in 2008 that NSG waiver could result in a nuclear arms race in South Asia. He also ack**wledged that it was an unnecessary policy “making these exemptions further infuriate Pakistan into further expanding its nuclear capacity. It is a very dangerous long term grand especially when we are so concerned on the specter of nuclear ******* fallen in the hands of **n-state actors.”
