Vows to lead people on streets if Panama inquiry swept under the carpet; meets Khursheed and Qaim, discusses party strategy; PPP to file reference for PM’s disqualification tomorrow

KARACHI: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said that the Panama leaks have provided the nation an opportunity to get rid of corruption and conduct across-the-board accountability in the country.

He held separate meetings with the opposition leader in the National Assembly, Syed Khursheed Shah, and Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, at the Bilawal House here on Saturday, and discussed national political issues, the Panama leaks and law and order in Sindh.

Bilawal said his party wanted across-the-board accountability instead of targeting any individual or party. He said whosoever, including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who stashed money abroad under the garb of offshore companies, would be brought to book. If Nawaz Sharif tried to sweep the issue of the Panama leaks inquiry under the carpet through politicking, the PPP would lead the protesters on streets.

Expressing his concern over the killing of famous Qawwal Amjad Sabri and abduction of Sindh High Court Chief Justice Sajjad Ali Shah’s son Owais Shah, the PPP chairman asked the Sindh CM to improve the law and order situation in the province.

Bilawal said that the law and order situation should be the first priority of the government and any loopholes in the security of citizens should be plugged and police and other law-enforcing agencies should be put into more vigilant gear to stop terrorists and other criminal elements from harming society.

He said the war against terrorism was going on all over the country thus the incidents of terrorism in Karachi including the killing of Amjad Sabri and kidnapping of Owais Shah were **t a mere law and order issue.

The chief minister told Bilawal Bhutto adequate resources were being provided for the maintenance of law and order and the operation against terrorism was being funded from provincial resources.

He said that some federal ministers were trying to define the National Action Plan against terrorism on a province-to-province basis. They were trying to describe the incidents of terrorism in Sindh as a law and order problem to blame the PPP government, while similar acts of crimes in other provinces were being treated as terrorism, he added.

Qaim said the lack of cooperation in the fields of finances and law-enforcing was causing difficulties for the provincial government to cope with the situation.

In his meeting with Khursheed Shah, Bilawal Bhutto discussed the party’s post-Ramazan strategy regarding the Panama leaks. Shah briefed Bilawal about the meeting with Federal Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, the situation in Sindh and other political matters.

Both leaders discussed references, filed against five individuals including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The current situation of Sindh also came under discussion.

Meanwhile, the PPP decided to file a reference on Monday, seeking the disqualification of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The reference, to be filed by PPP General Secretary Sardar Latif Khosa, would seek the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif, Shahbaz Sharif, Hamza Shahbaz, Ishaq Dar and Captain (retd) Muhammad Safdar.

The reference alleges that the prime minister showed wrong asset details of his wife and children while he also misled the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) regarding his income tax returns. It also alleges that the PM committed smuggling and money-laundering.

A letter of the State Bank of Pakistan regarding a bank default of Rs6.5 billion would also be made part of the reference. Khosa said all five of them do **t meet the criteria for holding a public ****** under Article 62 and 63 of the Constitution.

He said the reference comprises around 1,000 pages having sufficient evidence to declare them disqualified. It includes self-contradictory statements of PM Nawaz Sharif, Shahbaz Sharif and Ishaq Dar as evidence.

Tax statements are part of the reference, which accuses the PM and others of tax evasion. Khosa said all the evidence would be presented before the ECP.
