Music producer and author Zohaib Kazi talks to Instep about picking up two LSA **minations, the evolution of Pakistan’s biggest music show, Coke Studio and the journey of Ismail.
Music producer, **velist and Coke Studio veteran, the terrific Zohaib Kazi, who recently tied the k**t with photographer Insiya Syed, is having quite a year. Having picked up a **mination at the upcoming Lux Style Awards in the category of Best Music Album for his creation, Ismail Ka Urdu Sheher, the music-book album that released last year, as well as a **d in the Best Music Video category for the edgy ‘Wake Up/Jaago’ – directed by Kamal Khan - Kazi is back in the spotlight and has plenty of insightful things to say about matters of music and more.
In a telephonic conversation with Instep, Kazi explained his unique perspective on award shows, the future of Ismail Ka Urdu Sheher and the upcoming season of Coke Studio.

Reflecting on why award shows matter, Kazi told Instep in his trademark thoughtful fashion, “Awards are a barometer for appreciation,” said Kazi. “In a challenging environment where the ‘music’ scene is diminishing, I see my **mination and comrades’ as an ‘ack**wledgement’ of our contribution to the ‘arts and culture’ of the country and our region.”
Discussing his LSA **mination **d(s), Kazi **ted further, “Getting **minated for the oldest running award show of the country definitely sent a rush of blood to our hearts and a scent of fresh air to the minds.”
Though several award ceremonies exist in Pakistan, the Lux Style Awards continue to matter because they are independent. K**wing the ground reality only too well, Kazi **ted that LSAs inculcate a sense of relief for surviving in this current climate of mayhem and madness.
“LSA is a testament of consistency for going on for as long as it has been going on,” said Kazi. “It gives a sense of relief that **t all has changed in the trying times of the country and that some things have survived and thrived to exist. Perhaps the one thing I would recommend to the LSAs is adding the category of Best Musician. We have so many great musicians like Faraz Anwar, Ahsan Bari, Aahad Nayani and many others.”
Moving away from award shows to the country’s most popular music show, Coke Studio, Kazi explained how the new season is a big leap for the industry and the show’s illustrious history.

“The evolution of the show is important to remember; observing Strings, I can say that they are very secure about who they are. It was a visionary move for them to invite other musicians to come and share their k**wledge, experience and methodology while keeping an open-door policy, defying industry **rms and by serving as a guiding force.”
Kazi, who has been a part of Coke Studio for several years **w and has worked with Rohail Hyatt and Strings in their capacity as producers respectively, feels this pertinent evolution of the show can be best explained with the analogy of a closed system versus open-source.
“Coke Studio was a closed system. **w, for the first time, it has become an open-source platform. It is a leap for the music industry and the vision for the show has broadened as a result.”
From audio to visual to design to the soundscape, there is an attention to detail, technical and otherwise that should keep all of us interested when the show makes it appearance later this summer.
Kazi, who has learned from his years at Coke Studio and has grown as an artist and an individual, meanwhile, has **t closed the chapter on Ismail Ka Urdu Sheher. **ting that it is actually a trilogy, Kazi told Instep that he hopes to penetrate the foreign and local market further with the second part. “I will be more proactive,” he **ted. And given Kazi’s track record and the consistency and quality of his work, we expect **thing less.
