KARACHI: The All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) expressed its profound gratitude to the Finance Minister, Senator Ishaq Dar, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Revenue, Haroon Akhtar, and the Chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue for accepting the proposals of the media industry for the new budget.
Umer Mujib Shami, Secretary-General, APNS, an**uncing the decisions taken at the Executive Committee meeting held on June 5, 2016 under the chairmanship of its President, Sarmad Ali, stated that the Executive Committee was briefed on the meeting of the APNS and the PBA held with the Finance Minister wherein the proposals of the media industry for the new budget were thoroughly discussed.
The Finance Minister, Senator Ishaq Dar, Haroon Akhtar, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Revenue, and the Chairman of the FBR passionately considered the proposals and very kindly agreed to withdraw the proposed Sales Tax on newspapers, **t to enhance the Custom Duty on import of newsprint for the APNS member publications and fixing the Withholding Tax for the media industry @ 1.5% under the FTR Regime.
The Executive Committee expressed its thanks to the Federal Government and appreciated the efforts of the APNS ******-bearers to bail out the industry from the burden of the proposed taxes.
The Executive Committee meeting was also joined by Rao Tehseen Ali Khan, Principal Information ******r, who told the meeting that the payment against the dues for the devolved ministries and the old outstanding bills were in the process of payment which will mature by the end of the current month.
The PIO also assured the meeting that the long-pending **tification on 15% increase in the government advertisement rates will be issued by the end of June 2016.
The Executive Committee urged the PIO to expedite the payment process to ease the liquidity problems of the member publications so that they may pay the dues of the workers before Eid.
The members of the Executive Committee reiterated their demands for implementation of the regional quota in letter and spirit and stated that the PID was making additions from the quota to the **n-regional publications, which is grossly contrary to the assurances and policy of the Federal Government.
The Executive Committee formed a committee under the President, APNS, and the ******-bearers to take up the issue with the Federal Government on priority basis. The Executive Committee considered the applications for associate membership and decided to grant membership to Weekly Eco**mic World, Lahore, Daily Sama, Islamabad, and Weekly Taqat International, Lahore.
