PESHAWAR: The government on Monday held talks with representatives of the protesting nurses and promised to resolve all their genuine problems.

Health Minister Shahram Khan Tarakai, after meeting the representatives of the nursing staff, formed a committee chaired by Secretary Health Abid Majeed to find an amicable solution to all their genuine problems. He said he would raise the issue of compensatory allowance of nurses with the chief minister.

Shahram Khan Tarakai said the government would withdraw all the disciplinary measures taken against the nurses if the nursing staff ensured services at hospitals. The health minister promised to increase the stipend of student nurses and review their rustication from nursing schools. It may be mentioned here that the nursing community staged a protest outside the KP Assembly recently by blocking the busy Khyber Road.

The daylong sit-in created a traffic mess in the city, which prompted the government to take punitive action against the nursing community. The government shut down the nursing schools. It took action against the ******-bearers of the nursing association and administration of the nursing schools. Several male nurses were charged with inciting the protests and sent to the Central Prison, Peshawar. The disciplinary actions drew criticism from various opposition parties, which accused the government of using heavy-handed tactics to suppress the nurses.
