NAWABSHAH: Farmers staged a protest sit-in on the National Highway and blocked all up and down traffic for three hours, leaving the passengers stranded and angry.
The stranded people languished during the length of the protest braving extremely hot weather with the mercury rising to 48 degrees Centigrade. Long queues of coaches, buses, vans and commercial vehicles stretched on either tracks of the highway -- from Peshawar-Lahore to Karachi and from Karachi to the upcountry.
Children, senior citizens and women were seen heavily exhausted due to the severe weather condition during the blockade.
The sit-in was staged by the farmers of Loondki Mi**r and Daulatpur Mi**r against acute shortage of water for the tail end growers while the big landlords continued to enjoy more than their share of water.
The protestors were holding sticks and were also seen torturing the passengers. The protesting farmers said that the staff of Irrigation Dad Division was involved in supply of additional water to the influential landlords while the crops of the farmers at the tail end were drying up.
Members of the civil society, however, said that blocking of the highways for personal interests has become a trend, and it required effective action to save the commuters from mental torture.
