Says deadlock on ToRs still persists as govt showing ** flexibility; rulers rectify a problem after damage has been done; budget lacks direction, planning; benefits of cut in fuel prices yet to be passed on to masses

ISLAMABAD: Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah on Monday said they were keeping the option of taking to the streets open, as the government was showing ** flexibility on the issue of ToRs.

Speaking on the floor of the National Assembly and later talking to newsmen, he said the deadlock on the issue of ToRs still persisted, as the government was **t showing flexibility. He asked the government to refrain from pushing the opposition to the streets. He said the government only rectified a problem after the damage had already been done.

“The government should move one step back and show flexibility,” the opposition leader maintained.Khursheed Shah, who kicked off a debate on the federal budget 2016-2017, said the budget lacked direction and planning, as the government had **t stated its policies categorically. “The budget is directionless and it is difficult to describe it as people, farmer or worker-friendly,” he said.

Khursheed said the government had been talking about overcoming power outages but the claim was **t backed by solid work.Earlier, the House lacked quorum at the outset of the debate on the budget due to which the proceedings remained suspended for over 30 minutes.

The opposition leader was also upset to see the situation and asked the Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq to take **tice of the lack of quorum as ** one would hear his speech. “I have thoroughly gone through the statistics but who will hear the speech,” he asked.

Displaying the written **tes of his speech, he suggested to the chair it would be sufficient if he made it a part of the National Assembly’s record. “The finance minister who is present here can also witness the situation with his own eyes,” he said.

Khursheed Shah proposed that instead of coal-based plants, the focus should be on hydel power to produce cheaper and environment-friendly power. He said agriculture was facing a crisis and hoped that the package an**unced in the budget would be implemented in letter and spirit. He suggested that sales tax on tractors should be abolished to provide relief to farmers. The leader of the opposition said the tendency of relying heavily on loans should be discarded. “Instead, we should learn to live within our own resources,” he said.

The opposition leader said tax had been levied on plain paper while printed paper was exempted from tax, which had reduced the printing of the Holy Quran in the country. “Consequently, we have to import copies of the Holy Quran from Indonesia, Malaysia and other countries,” he said. He said the government should pay attention in this regard to encourage the printing of Holy Quran in the country.

Khursheed Shah said due to expensive electricity for industries, production of different products had been reduced. He said the benefits of reduction in the prices of petroleum products should be transferred to the masses immediately. He said the major victims of higher price of diesel were farmers and poor segments of the society.

Talking to newsmen outside the Parliament House, he said the government’s priorities had **t been mentioned anywhere in the budget. He said the budget reserved for important sectors like education had been reduced instead of being increased.
