Shoe brands on our radar this week.

Surviving the sub-continental heat is ** mean feat. With global warming sending temperatures soaring internationally and record breaking heat predicated this year, getting through the season has never looked more excruciating. We chop our hair short, switch to lawn and cooler, breathable fabrics and slather sunblock for protection but footwear remains woefully neglected. Staple kolhapuris are the go to slippers for summer but who’s a fan of the terrible tan lines they leave behind? Plus even a quick trip to the market leaves your feet streaked with dirt and sweat. Tres chic, it is **t!

This is why, even in the heat of summer we prefer sticking to our favourite toe-covering traditional footwear: khussas. While this local take on ballet flats would usually be paired only with shalwar kameez or wedding wear, this plebeian shoe has recently been elevated to haute levels with an influx of bespoke brands that offer a modern update to the aesthetic while still retaining its comfort and convenience. Instep rounds up three brands that have recently come to the limelight for bringing something new to the table.

Odd and Eve

Firstly, we’re suckers for word play and cool brand names. Odd and Eve scores points instantly for their quirky name but the fascination doesn’t just end there. The brand offers gorgeous hand painted khussas that seem reminiscent of Monet’s watercolour paintings. It offers two variations: khussas and peshawari sandals, all meticulously lacquered by hand painted flora and fauna in pastel shades. If you’re looking for a break from the usual tilla embroidered khussas, Odd and Eve will be our recommendation.

Soma International

Don’t be fooled by the name! Soma has great variety of footwear ranging from tasselled slip-ons to embroidered khussas, though **t the usual Khussa Mahal variety. Their
offerings include printed and 3D embellished footwear featuring elephants, peacocks and even shellfish! We’re also quite smitten by their pearl encrusted versions that are prefect for a formal night out in Eastern wear. Soma shoes work great with our shalwar kameez but you’re awarded extra style points if you can pull them off with boyfriend jeans or resort
ensembles.

Jooti Shooti

We love the colloquial reference as a brand name. What’s even cooler about Jooti Shooti is that they embrace Pakistan’s kitsch, colourful ethnic roots and bring them to the fore with their footwear. From truck art phrases hand painted on peshawari sandals to bird motifs, blooms and mo**chrome cat faces, ico**clastic pop art adorns Jooti Shooti shoes, allowing you to add some zing into your wardrobe without verging on tacky.
