ISLAMABAD: The Senate was informed on Tuesday that there were as many as 21 identified potential areas where water reservoirs and small dams could be built, including the Kalabagh Dam with 3,600-megawatt power general capacity and 6.1 million acre feet (MAF) live storage capacity.
In a written reply to a question by Senator Mian Muhammad Attique of MQM, Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Muhammad Asif said that these also included the Diamer Basha Dam, for which project preparatory works at the site are in progress and financing for main works was being arranged by the government.
He maintained that the implementation/construction work on the Kalabagh Dam could be started on the decision of the Government of Pakistan.
The minister said that during the last 10 years, Wapda had constructed five dams – Gomal Zam dam, Satpara dam, Mirani dam, Sabakzai dam and Dawarat dam. Gomal Zam Dam is at the top of power generation with 17.4 megwatts while Mirani and Sabakzai dam produced ** electricity.
He added that the feasibility study of the Murunj dam located in Koh-e-Suleman Range was being carried out by Wapda.
