ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Rawalpindi, has arrested Shafqat Ali Cheema, Director, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Islamabad, who is said to be in possession of assets beyond his k**wn sources of income.
The assets inquiry of the official was initiated by the NAB Rawalpindi. The assets proforma was served on him and the same has been returned by him after completion. General search of assets in the name of the accused and members of his family was initiated whereby most of the replies from the authorities concerned have been received.
Bank accounts search of the accused and his cable business company was also carried out, which showed heavy tur**ver. Salary and service record has also been received by the NAB Rawalpindi from the quarters concerned.
NAB had received complaint against Shafqat Ali Cheema. The accused made frequent foreign private tours with family to Europe and USA in recent years.
The accused would be produced before the Accountability Court, Islamabad, on Wednesday for 14-day physical remand under the NAB Ordinance 1999.
NAB DG Rawalpindi Zahir Shah said that in the light of the directions of NAB Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry, all-out efforts were being made to arrest the corrupt and recover the looted money from swindlers.
He said that NAB chairman had categorically directed all ranks of ******rs/officials of NAB to pursue proactively corruption cases as per NAB’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) transparently and on merit and take necessary measures to arrest the corrupt and also proclaimed offenders in order to eradicate corruption from the country.
Meanwhile, in line with its policy of zero tolerance for corruption within NAB, Kamran Janweri, an ******r of Investigation Wing III, NAB Karachi, has been caught red-handed by NAB Karachi itself.
He is being proceeded against under the provisions of NAO 1999. A graft case has been registered against him and he has been put behind bars.
