IGP says civics be taught as mandatory subject to educate youth against social evils

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police have suggested to the provincial government to introduce mandatory civics subject with special chapters on ho**ur-killing, child abuse and rights of mi**rities to educate the youth about social evils, a source told The News on Monday.

The inspector general of police (IGP) Nasir Khan Durrani suggested to chief minister Pervez Khattak that civics may be included in textbooks as mandatory subject from class-VII to XII. He made the suggestion in a letter written in the wake of the Donga Gali incident in which a girl student of grade-9 was burnt alive in a car by the locals.

“The gruesome murder of a young girl from Abbottabad is a disturbing revelation of how far our society has digressed from the cardinal principles of Islam and constitution. A criminal bunch of locals condemned the young girl to death on account of allegedly facilitating the elopement of a**ther female,” said the letter ** DO, 188, /PA-PPO sent to Chief Minister Pervez Khattak by the Central Police ****** on May 11.

The completely burnt body of the young girl was found recently in a car in Makol village in Abbottabad district. “The victim was burnt on the verdict of a local jirga as they suspected she facilitated elopement of a**ther girl. The case has been worked out and the accused have been arrested,” Mohammad Saeed Wazir, the Regional Police ******r Hazara, told The News.

As the incident shocked the entire country, the KP Police bosses suggested to the government to make efforts for creating awareness among the people **t to commit crimes anymore against the vulnerable segments of the society.

“There are innumerable crimes being committed against the vulnerable segment of the society particularly women, children and mi**rities. Apart from Karokari, ho**ur killing, swara and domestic violence, child abuse is the most **torious form of crime that has deleterious effects on the psychological life of the children. Similarly, exploitation of mi**rities in the guise of alleged desecration of Islamic injunctions is a k**wn fact,” read the letter written by the IGP.

It added that all these crimes are in stark contradiction of the Islamic values and Constitution of Pakistan and have compromised the reputation of the country in the comity of the nations.

“While KP Police is determined to bring the culprits of these hei**us crimes to justice, it is essential that the society in general and the future generation in particular are taught about the various social vices and their implications. The study by the international organizations has also pointed out illiteracy and lack of awareness of fundamental rights as the main cause of these evils,” the letter said.

The police suggested to the government to introduce civics, which was once taught at schools, from grade-7 to 12 with special focus on the topics of ho**ur killing, child abuse, mi**rities’ rights, fundamental rights described in the Constitution of Pakistan, traffic laws and rules, general security, cooperation with law-enforcing agencies and how to keep an eye on anything suspicious in the vicinity.
