The hell of summer

The months of June and July are eco**mically the hardest for people in the country. The country remains perpetually deficient in foreign exchange earnings due to faulty industrial policies and poor exports resulting from the costly and deficient electricity supply. This foreign exchange imbroglio has forced us to beg from rich countries. There are also reports of embezzlement of billions of rupees in the power sector for which funds have to be generated in the two hot summer months of June and July to show good eco**mic performance to lending agencies such as the IMF. Thus generation companies try their best to hoodwink and loot people in every way possible. And so, anyone whose meter shows less consumption than last year’s bill of the same month has his meter declared as defective and a heavy fine is imposed on him, although he may have gotten a solar system installed to control his consumption. Moreover, meter readers do **t regularly visit people’s premises and let units accumulate and suddenly hand a bill of thousands of rupees in June. Worst of all, meter readers have the authority to declare any meter defective and put a punitive recovery of thousands of rupees at will. Resultantly, these summer months are doubly hellish for the common citizen due to the sweltering heat and our energy companies’ shenanigans. The government is requested to find some sustainable solutions to these permanent problems. Rafiq Ahmad Muzaffargarh
