KARACHI: The Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi chief, Afaq Ahmed, has offered an olive branch to his rival party, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, on Monday in what he said to be “the greater interests of the Urdu-speaking community”.
Speaking at a press conference at his home in Defence, Ahmed invited members of the MQM Coordination Committee to com to his residence or invite him to their headquarters, Nine Zero, so that the community could sort out internal differences on its own.
He said that despite ideological differences with Muttahida, he was offering conciliation to resolve the unending issues of the Mohajirs who, he said, had been the worst affected in the current political turmoil.
“I am **t asking the MQM chief or Muttahida but inviting the Rabita Committee to sit together and resolve the problems confronting the Mohajir community,” he said. Seeking comment from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, this correspondent telephoned the party’s senior deputy conveners, Dr Farooq Sattar and Amir Khan, but they were unavailable.
However, highly-placed sources said that Muttahida went into a closed-door meeting to discuss Afaq’s invitation but said that “until aggression from the other side is **t stopped, there is ** question of any conciliation”.
Afaq said at the press conference that in the backdrop of the current political developments, he tried his best to stay aloof from what had been transpiring, hoping the Mohajir community to arrive at a decision.
“Since I left the party I never contacted the MQM chief, but I want to ask those institutions who are teaching patriotism why they got in touch with the MQM chief,” he said and referred to the year 2007 when Altaf Hussain had publicly admitted in India that “the creation of Pakistan was a mistake” and yet the then ruler, Pervez Musharraf, never took any **tice of the MQM chief’s statement in India **r did Musharraf file any case against him.
“If there is ** positive response from Muttahida, then it would be a clear indication who is interested in sorting out the affairs of the Mohajir community and who is **t,” he said. “Instead of registering FIRs against our own people, let us sit at the table and engage senior Mohajirs for a major political decision,” he said.
“We must save the Mohajirs from further disintegration,” he said. “Throughout this confrontational situation, the Mohajir cause was damaged. Eighty percent of the employees in the Water Board are Mohajir, but Karachi faced an acute water shortage. The educational system deteriorated due to mismanagement,” Afaq said.
Regarding the local bodies’ election, he said unfortunately powers were **t devolved. He appealed to the government to accept the mandate so that the local bodies’ institution should resolve the basic issues of the city.
“Why only for one man, the entire community is being labeled as RAW agents? Why we are being punished,” he asked. “If someone is associated with or working for RAW then it is the responsibility of the state to investigate and register a case against such a person. It is **t the duty of any individual or any political party to file a treason case against any person,” he said.
