One photographer captured a decade of surreal 1930s car crashes

Leslie Jones was born in Boston in 1886, and developed an interest in photography from an early age. While working in a factory, he made extra cash doing freelance camera work on the side.
After losing two fingers in a machinery accident, he decided to focus on photography full-time, joining the Boston Herald-Traveler as a staff photographer in 1917
For 39 years, he dashed around Boston and surrounding towns with his 4x5 camera, capturing lively images of sports, crime, animals and architecture.
One of the areas in which he was most prolific was the documentation of car accidents. In the 1930s, he rushed to the scenes of hundreds of fender-benders, pileups and crashes, and captured the aftermaths in photos that ranged from morbid and tragic to bizarre and comical. Read more...
