Up to 5,000 turtle doves to be hunted and shot in Malta

The European turtle dove population is already declining, but its numbers could get a lot worse with hunting season in Malta around the corner.
Maltese hunters are permitted to shoot 5000 of the doves between April 17 and April 30, despite warnings from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/22690419/0) that the bird is on the red list (http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/22690419/0)of animals that are threatened.

According to the nature union (http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/22690419/0), the bird's population size in Europe is estimated to be decreasing at a rate of 30% to 49% every three generations.
