The doctor and mother who exposed the Flint water crisis will receive PEN award for courage

PEN America is adding two new ho**rees to its 2016 PEN Literary Gala lineup: LeeAnne Walters and Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, the mother and doctor who helped expose the water crisis in Flint, MI.
The crisis began in 2014, when Flint temporarily switched to using the Flint River as the city's water source. Despite resident complaints about the water after the switch, officials continued to declare that the water was safe.
Eventually, in 2015, researches at Virginia Tech concluded that the water in Flint was "creating a public health threat."
