As the first deal between an OPEC and **n-OPEC member in 15 years, it marks a significant declaration of intent. But it is **t geared toward buoying oil prices, as some might hope. Rather, it has much more to do with blocking Iran’s re-emergence as a global oil exporter. The agreement between the two countries to keep output at January levels led to much **ise of a market rally, with little to show in the way of gains. The benchmark price of Brent crude jumped briefly from US$33.4 to US$35.55 a barrel but it will **t lead to a sustained rise in prices. For starters, the agreement is **t a cut in production levels. In January, Saudi production was sky high; significantly up from December. So the an**uncement of the freeze in production was part of a strategy to merely stabilise prices. Why is the state trying to jail married asylum seekers? It seems the authorities did everything they could to separate a married Eritrean couple who fled their home country and sought refuge in Israel. Meet Awat and Ksenet, asylum seekers from Eritrea who also happen to be a married couple. The state is currently trying to separate them and send Awat to jail. Modernism, art and literature: A reflection on Europe and Turkey in the inter-war period During the inter-war period, European authoritarian regimes’ perception of art and literature was closely related with their view on modernism. Even though the leaders of these regimes were quite modern figures in the sense that they pursued further industrialization, tech**logy, growth and development while preserving a future-oriented outlook, they were highly cynical about modernism when it comes to art and literature. The reason behind this was very simple: modernism was perceived as a counter-culture, always having the potential to criticize the regime itself by offering alternative realities other than they promote. In other words, they were negative towards modernism because modernism put emphasis on the individual and promoted the auto**my of the artistic and literary field, leaving modernism – at least the way we k**w it – at odds with these regimes’ ambition to create a collective, unified national culture. That was the reason why most of the modernist artwork in Germany were burned to the ground or USSR got rid of all the previous modernist work within this period.
