Criminals earned $6.6 billion smuggling refugees into Europe last year

People-smuggling gangs earned up to $6.6 billion in 2015, and most of that came from trafficking migrants and refugees (http://mashable.com/category/refugee-crisis/?utm_campaign=Mash-BD-Synd-Tango-All-Partial&utm_cid=Mash-BD-Synd-Tango-All-Partial) into Europe, according to a new Europol report (https://www.europol.europa.eu/content/EMSC_launch) released Monday.
Calling people smuggling the "fastest growing criminal market in Europe," the European Union's police agency said it expects that figure "to double or triple if the scale of the current migration crisis persists in the upcoming year."

Europol said as many as 12,000 criminals from more than a dozen countries — including Bulgaria, Egypt, Hungary, Iraq and Kosovo — were in on the take.
