Why are Indian villages banning girls from using mobile phones?

In the last year, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has been campaigning for its Digital India initiative to connect the majority of Indians who do **t have access to the Internet. However rather than viewing techo**logy as empowering, several village councils in the country are still trying to prohibit the use of mobile phones among girls and young women.

Earlier this month, the Suraj village in Modi's home state Gujarat banned teenage girls and single young women from using mobile phones.
The decision was taken by the village council in Mehsana district, which felt that tech**logy was a "nuisance to society."
