A candidate in the Federal National Council (FNC) elections has vowed to campaign to make multiple marriages more affordable – a plan he believes will end the “problem of spinsterhood” in the UAE and address the national population imbalance. Sultan Al Nadeeb, 30, from Ras Al Khaimah, told 7DAYS the solution for “the critical spinsterhood problem in the UAE can only be solved if men marry more women”. Al Nadeeb, a member of the UAE Armed Forces, is one of 329 Emiratis running in the election, to be held on October 3. “The right to marry four women is stipulated in sharia law and any man who decides to take this move is **t doing anything wrong or disgraceful,” he said. Al Nadeeb, who has one wife and four children, cited figures, which he says are from reliable studies, claiming there are about 175,000 unmarried Emirati women over the age of 30 and many divorcees. Al Nadeeb insisted that his policy would help address the demographic imbalance in the UAE where expats outnumber Emiratis by more than five to one. “When you marry more than one wife you will have more children and this will eventually tilt the demographic imbalance in our favour,” he said. “We have Emirati women who are 35 years old and even 40 years old who are still **t married.” The FNC candidate added: “And they have ** prospects of getting married unless they become a second wife. This trend is corrupting our society and is encouraging people to carry out sins.” Emirati women make up 49.5 per cent of the population, according to the UAE National Bureau of Statistics. However, according to Dubai Statistics Centre, only 60 per cent of the emirate’s marriages in 2014 were between two Emiratis. This, Al Nadeeb says, is one reason why many Emirati women are left without a husband. To encourage more men to take more wives, Al Nadeeb is promising voters he will lobby for changes in the UAE marriage fund and housing aid that will make it possible for a man to secure loans and a grant for each wife he marries, rather than the current limit of one. “The main reason for many men shying away from having more than one wife is a financial one,” Al Nadeeb told 7DAYS. “They can**t afford to support more than one household but if we provided them with the means I am sure that more men will take more wives.” Al Nadeeb’s father has two wives and has a total of 28 children from his two marriages. And the candidate vowed: “I personally will marry a second wife if I can achieve a change of policy. I have already informed my wife of this and explained to her that she will **t gain anything by objecting.” His policy plan has sparked a debate on social media. One supporter tweeted: “Women in our society, especially those who are married, are abusing men, and they are confiscating the opportunity of other women to get married.” However, some, particularly women, have hit out at his idea. “Who told you that the girl would accept it,” tweeted one user. Al Nadeeb remains defiant: “I do **t care about the negative comments. I have many who are supporting my idea, including many women. They say ‘we are getting old and can**t find a suitable husband’.” [email protected]
