Thoratec*won the European CE Mark approval to introduce its HeartMate PHP (Percutaneous Heart Pump) as a hemodynamic support system during*high-risk percutaneous coronary interventions. The device is able to move up to five liters of blood per minute thanks to a tiny motor spinning at about 20,000 RPMs. It*is inserted percutaneously via the femoral artery using a 14 French sheath and, once delivered into the aortic valve, expands to 24 French, eventually delivering near-**rmal blood flow through the vessel.
Thttp://cdn.medgadget.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/PHP_Heart-Triptych.jpghe HeartMate PHP was designed to impart*low shear stress to the blood flowing through the pump, helping to reduce the chance of clot formation and the potential for a stroke.
More system features according to*the product page:
– Wide 24F blood-flow pathways for over 4 L/min of mean flow
– Stable once placed across the aortic valve
– Internal driveline constructed of 10 interwoven microcables for maximum durability in tortuous anatomy
– Compact, lightweight console with a user-friendly touchscreen interface
– Reduces end-diastolic pressure, end-diastolic volume, and oxygen demand of the myocardium
