With earnings of $115.2 million since its official release last Friday July 10, the Universal Pictures family comedy is the second-biggest opening weekend of all time for an animated feature, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Minions is second only to Shrek the Third, a 2007 picture which amassed $122.5 million in its first few days at domestic theatres. Minions is **t only faring well in the United States, as the picture has earned an impressive $395.7 million worldwide so far. French filmmaker and director Kyle Balda helm the animated movie, which is a spin-off/prequel to the Despicable Me flicks, with a $74 million budget. It follows the little yellow organisms as they set out to find a new supervillain to worship, eventually discovering Scarlet Overkill, who is voiced by Sandra Bullock. Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Jennifer Saunders and Steve Carell also lend their voices to characters in Minions. In second place this week is Jurassic World, which earned $18.1 million. Since its American debut on June 12, Jurassic World has earned $590.6 million domestically and just under $1.5 billion worldwide, making it the first picture ever to earn $500 million in the US so swiftly. The picture, which stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ty Simpkins, Vincent D’O**frio, BD Wong and Omar Sy, managed to trump all competition for several weeks in a row until it was k**cked out of the first position by Inside Out during the 4th of July weekend. Animated comedy Inside Out landed in third place this weekend, with gross sales of $17.1 million. Inside Out’s total domestic earnings have **w reached over $283 million and worldwide it has amassed $435 million. The Disney Pixar flick centres on the efforts of five emotions living within 11-year-old girl Riley to make her life experience more pleasurable as she prepares to move away from her childhood home. Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling, Diane Lane, Bill Hader and Lewis Black all lend their voices to characters in the film.
