To be Prescribed Soon: Implantable Drug Releasing Microchips

Over the past few years we’ve covered Microchips Biotech (http://www.medgadget.com/2012/02/wireless-implantable-microchips-deliver-*****-when-needed.html), an MIT spin-out company that’s developed an implantable tech**logy to release ***** inside the body in a controlled manner. It’s been almost a decade since the tech**logy has had initial development, but **w it may finally see clinical light of day. The company has **w partnered with Teva Pharmaceutical to produce the initial product and put it through clinical trials.
The implantable chip has tiny reservoirs, each containing one dose of a particular medication. The tops of these reservoirs are capped by a metal membrane, which can be moved out of the way by delivering an electric current. Each reservoir can be individually activated to open up depending on the applied current, allowing for administration at the exact times and even with*multiple medications.
The company’s microchips have already gone through a successful clinical trial (http://stm.sciencemag.org/content/early/2012/02/15/scitranslmed.3003276) on patients with osteoporosis, delivering teriparatide directly without having to go through regular injections.
