The amazing evolution of Politifact’s ‘if you like your plan you can keep it’ rating
**Written by Doug Powers
Politifact’s rating of the famous Obama promise “if you like your plan you can keep it” has gone through a heck of an evolution (http://washingtonexaminer.com/politifact-rewrites-its-own-history-in-obamacare-lie-of-the-year-decision/article/2540680) in the past five years.
In October of 2008 (http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2008/oct/09/barack-obama/obamas-plan-expands-existing-system/) “if you like your plan you can keep it” was totally true:

Less than four years later, in June of 2012 (http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2012/jun/29/barack-obama/barack-obama-says-under-his-health-care-law-those-/) it was downgraded to “half true” (“true,” but only for the people who could manage to keep their plans):

However, in October of 2012 (http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2012/oct/04/mitt-romney/mitt-romney-says-20-million-will-lose-health-insur/), Mitt Romney had a close brush with the truth, but Politifact nevertheless rated it totally “false”:

**w, “If you like your plan you can keep it” has been deemed 2013′s “Lie of the Year” (http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2013/dec/12/lie-year-if-you-like-your-health-care-plan-keep-it/):

The “promise was impossible to keep”? Better late than never, I suppose.
“If you like your plan you can keep it” is actually the lie of the century, but that would negate their previous ratings, so “year” will have to suffice.
You might have **ticed that the ratings most helpful to Obama — Oct. 2008′s “Obama’s promise is completely true” and Oct. 2012′s “Romney’s claim is completely false” — are the ones coincidentally closest to the elections.
