Elekta won European CE marking for its new Leksell Gamma Knife Icon*radiosurgery*system. The device expands the applicability of radiosurgery by being able to target pretty much anything*within the brain, irrespective of the size, location, or type of object. The device can be used with or without a frame head immobilizer and has the capability of performing very precise “Microradiosurgery”.

http://cdn.medgadget.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Gamma-Knife-Icon.pngThe system uses stereotactic imaging to constantly monitor head position and Adaptive DoseControl tech**logy that makes sure the proper amount of radiation hits the target from every direction. The system can also perform multiple-session treatments that will benefit a lot of patients who have trouble spending long periods under the Gamma Knife.

Some more features according to the product page:

The unique integrated stereotactic cone beam CT is a new addition to Icon. Calibrated to the patient positioning system, it determines stereotactic coordinates in 3D using bony anatomy. Following co-registration of images, Leksell GammaPlan® automatically adapts the plan to account for any needed correction in patient position. Thanks to the unique dose delivery attributes of Leksell Gamma Knife, the system can adapt for patient rotation, shot by shot, without any mechanical movements, contributing to the highest accuracy. Online Dose Evaluation enables you to compare the dose distribution that is about to be delivered to the dose that you planned to deliver. This is done at the console and if needed, the plan can be adapted online, quickly and easily.

The unique design with isocentric targeting and multiple fixed beams make sure the dose is delivered where you want it and **where else. With Icon, the dose to **rmal brain is typically 2-4 times lower than with other tech**logies. The extracranial dose is in the range of 4-120 times lower.
