$20 Initiative For Clinical Photo-documentation
25/05/2015 – A $20 initiative was launched by OphthalmicDocs (http://www.ophthalmicdocs.com/) to make clinical photo-documentation an easier and affordable task. The device is k**wn as MAGcro (http://www.ophthalmicdocs.com/#!magcro-macro-lens/c1mqg), which is a single lens system used in conjunction with a smartphone to capture high quality magnified images.
Following the successful launch of the world’s first open source retinal imaging adapter (OphthalmicDocs Fundus (http://www.ophthalmicdocs-fundus.org/)), OphthalmicDocs aim to widen its reach by providing affordable diag**stic eye care equipment. The team behind this project has been working on this entire ecosystem for over a year **w. Instead of spending thousands of dollars on a dermatoscope or a clinical DSLR camera, a clinician can **w easily photo-document any dermatological conditions within seconds.
The device was initially developed for recreational macro photography. It has however find its way into medical usage. It started when Dr. Hong Sheng Chiong, the founder of OphthalmicDocs, was doing some voluntary clinical work in the deep parts of Borneo Island. He was conducting rural eye examination and screening for those people who live hundreds of miles away from the nearest health centre. Whilst his interest is mainly in eyes, he came across various dermatological and external lid conditions which he knew he needed to help in getting the right diag**sis. He managed to capture these images with MAGcro and sent it to his colleagues for advice. It became a real-time tele-consultation and he was able to provide the right treatment upon getting the right diag**sis.
“We managed to keep our devices’ price that low because we are a social enterprise with the aim of delivering affordable diag**stic eye equipment” said Dr. Hong. The company an**unced that it makes only a 10% profit from all sales of which it will be re-invested for further research and development. ** dividend will be distributed.
Dr. Hong has also recently delivered a TEDx (https://youtu.be/j4p5PJi71FU) talk at Auckland. The main focus of his talk was on fighting blindness of which he offered his designs and intellectual property for free as a gift to the world to fight preventable blindness. His talk was met with a standing ovation.
