They tend to hunt fish, water birds or small mammals, the department\u2019s site reads, though \u2014 in the right context \u2014 they\u2019ll hunt something bigger. They\u2019re \u201copportunistic\u201d hunters, <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalzoo.si.edu\/animals\/bald-eagle#:~:text=Bald%20eagles%20are%20opportunistic%20foragers,squirrels%2C%20prairie%20dogs%20and%20muskrats.\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">National Zoo<\/a>\u2018s site stated.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_11-0\">  Stacy\u2019s husband Jim speculated that the bald eagle wanted to eat their dog \u2014 and probably would if Gnocchi dared to venture outside.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_13-0\">  The pair noticed the bald eagle had been tagged, which meant a wildlife agency had been tracking the bird for research.
