In a major crackdown on corruption, the Central Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has arrested an army officer posted in the defense ministry on bribery charges. This action was taken on Saturday, in which Lieutenant Colonel Deepak Kumar Sharma, who was posted in the production department, was detained. He is facing a serious charge of taking a bribe of \u20b93 lakh from a private company based in Bengaluru. This action of CBI created a stir over corruption in defense agencies. According to CBI, Lieutenant Colonel Deepak Kumar Sharma has been posted on an important post in the production department under the defense ministry. The allegation is that he demanded bribes in return for providing improper favors to a company. After receiving the complaint, CBI laid a trap and arrested the accused officer red-handed while receiving bribe. After the arrest, CBI raided their premises where a large amount of cash was recovered. The investigating agency seized \u20b92.36 crore in cash from Sharma’s residence, which was allegedly obtained illegally. Apart from this, CBI has also registered a case against Colonel Kajal Bali, wife of Lieutenant Colonel Sharma, in this matter. Kajal Bali is an officer in the Indian Army and is currently posted as Commanding Officer, Divisional Ordinance Unit (DOU) Sriganganagar, Rajasthan. During the searches conducted by CBI, Rs 10 lakh cash was also recovered from the house of Colonel Kajal Bali. The investigating agency is trying to find out whether this amount was earned from legal sources or is linked to bribery and corruption. CBI believes that the role of both of them in this case should be thoroughly investigated. A middle man Vinod Kumar has also been arrested in this whole case. According to CBI, Vinod Kumar played the role of middleman in the transactions related to the defense deal and played an important role in the exchange of bribes. All three accused were produced in court, from where they were sent to CBI custody till December 23. CBI is now probing the entire network of corruption in this case. The investigating agency is also investigating whether more officials or private companies are involved in such activities. As a result of such allegations coming to light in a sensitive department related to the defense ministry, serious questions about security and transparency have been raised. Currently, CBI is interrogating the accused and the investigation is continuing on aspects like disproportionate assets, bribery and criminal conspiracy.
