fell by two-thirds in the year ending June 2025 compared with the previous 12 months, provisional figures indicate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The difference between the number of people arriving in the country and those leaving was 204,000, down from 649,000, with the fall mainly driven by fewer arrivals for work and study reasons, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">It comes as Home Office figures show the number of people who claimed asylum in the year to September 2025 reached a record high of 110,051.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The figures also show the number of asylum seekers in hotels as of September rose by 2% compared to the same time last year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dPVOKT\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The statistics form part of two separate releases published on Thursday \u2013 the ONS release on net migration to the year ending June 2025, and Home Office figures on the immigration system for the year ending September 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer told GB News that the fall in net migration is a \u201cstep in the right direction\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">This is the first set of ONS statistics on migration covering almost all of Labour\u2019s first year in government.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure>\n<div data-component=\"image-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 GunZh\">\n<div data-testid=\"image\" class=\"sc-5340b511-1 A blue line shows the total arrivals to the UK and a red line shows net migration from 1991 to the year ending June 2025..\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dPVOKT\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The Home Office numbers show initial decisions on asylum claims have increased to 133,502 people receiving an initial decision throughout the year \u2013 almost half of which (45%) were granted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">\u201cDecision making has reached a historically high level and the number of cases awaiting an initial decision fell 36% between September 2024 and September 2025, despite a record high number of asylum claims in this period,\u201d the release said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The backlog of those waiting for a first decision has been declining steadily throughout the year, but there has been a growing backlog of appeals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The government has committed to end the use of asylum hotels by the end of this parliament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">More than 36,000 people were temporarily housed in hotels in September, Thursday\u2019s figures show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">This is up 13% on the last three months, but due to fluctuation over the last year represents a smaller increase \u2013 of 2% \u2013 from September 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">It is lower than the peak of 56,018 people in hotels at the end of September 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">It follows legal battles over the use of hotels with <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c7839ywj9j7o\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\">Epping Forest District Council saying earlier this week they would appeal against a High Court decision that rejected its case to close Epping\u2019s Bell Hotel to asylum seekers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Responding to Thursday\u2019s statistics, a Home Office spokesperson said there were fewer than 200 hotels in use as they vowed \u201cto close every single one\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">\u201cWe are furious at the levels of illegal migrants and asylum hotels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">\u201cWork is well under way to move illegal migrants into military bases to ease pressure on communities across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dPVOKT\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Small boat arrivals saw an increase of 53% compared with the previous year, with 45,659 arriving via this route in the 12 months to September 2025. The Home Office release sets out that this figure is close to the 2022 peak which was 45,774.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">\u201cThe increase in arrivals in 2025 has coincided with an increase in the average number of people arriving by small boat,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Some 5,151 children (under 18s) crossed the Channel in small boats and claimed asylum in this time period \u2013 2,700 of whom were accompanied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The prime minister\u2019s spokesperson said the government \u201caccepts that the number of small boat crossings is too high\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure>\n<div data-component=\"image-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 gXrNRM\">\n<div data-testid=\"image\" class=\"sc-5340b511-1 cMIbKV\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/hamed.nwar.uk\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1764045160_857_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/hamed.nwar.uk\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/2912e710-cb8c-11f0-8c06-f5d460985095.png.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A line graph showing the number of people crossing the English Channel in small boats across the months of the year. Separate lines indicate each year with the months labeled on the x axis. 2025 is similar levels to 2022 although drops just below from around October.\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption class=\"sc-536eff7b-0 gnQokQ\">The release refers to small boat figures dating to September, but more recent figures have also been published \u2013 this chart shows the latest statistics<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dPVOKT\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Separately, 153 migrants have been removed from the UK to France under the pilot \u201cone in one out\u201d scheme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">A return flight today included the individual who was removed on October 16 and returned to the UK via small boat on November 8 (he has not been counted twice).<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">A total of 134 people have been brought to the UK through this scheme.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dPVOKT\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The figures released by the ONS, on net migration, take into account those who are claiming asylum in the UK after having entered via both regular and irregular routes \u2013 as well as other forms of immigration. They relate to people who have changed their place of residence for a period of 12 months or more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The overall figure saw a dramatic fall to June 2025, and comes alongside a drop of approximately 70% in arrivals of non-EU+ nationals on work and study dependent visas.
