It looks like our planet and its long-standing partner Luna have decided to explore polyamory.<\/p>\n<p>The newcomer is a small asteroid that was apparently snagged in the Earth\u2018s orbit where it now exists as a temporary \u201cmini-moon.\u201d Scientists discovered the new moon last week but wanted to confirm that it wasn\u2019t an artificial satellite or random space junk. It may still turn out that the satellite is artificial but all indications so far indicate it\u2019s the real deal.<\/p>\n<p>The Catalina team revealed the information in a tweet featuring an accompanying video showing Earth\u2018s new follower making its way around us.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BIG NEWS (thread 1\/3). Earth has a new temporarily captured object\/Possible mini-moon called 2020 CD3. On the night of Feb. 15, my Catalina Sky Survey teammate Teddy Pruyne and I found a 20th magnitude object. Here are the discovery images. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zLkXyGAkZl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/zLkXyGAkZl<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Kacper Wierzchos (@WierzchosKacper) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WierzchosKacper\/status\/1232460436634656769?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">February 26, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the astronomers, the Earth\u2018s new companion has an erratic orbit but there\u2019s little cause for concern: it\u2019s only about the size of compact car.<\/p>\n<p>These events are rare, but this isn\u2019t the first time Earth\u2018s managed attract another moon. Scientists discovered another one 14 years ago and it\u2019s logical to assume such events have occurred for as long as the Earth\u2018s been around.<\/p>\n<p>Earth\u2018s dalliances with other moons are also temporary.
