Today in Barcelona, Honor \u2014 Huawei\u2018s youth-focused, entry-level brand \u2014 announced the launch of its new phone: the 9X Pro.<\/p>\n
We covered the previous device in this series \u2014 the Honor 9X \u2014 in a piece about how good budget phones have become in the past few years. And, let me tell you something for free, the new 9X Pro has made this market all the more crowded.<\/p>\n
Anyway, now the device has been properly announced, here\u2019s everything you need to know about the Honor 9X Pro \u2014 including a short hands-on segment at the end. Don\u2019t say we don\u2019t treat you, folks.<\/p>\n
[Read:\u00a0The Canvia digital art frame is gorgeous, expensive, and flawed]<\/em><\/p>\n If you\u2019re making a youth-focused phone, the camera(s) are important \u2014 and Honor has given this area a lot of attention. The rear of the 9X Pro has:<\/p>\n On the front of the device, Honor has kept the same pop-up camera design as the 9X Pro. This little fella is 16MP, enough to really make your face, uh, pop<\/em> during selfie time.<\/p>\n I\u2019ve already mentioned the night mode function, but the 9X Pro\u2019s cameras also include AI video stabilization, which should make videos smoother.<\/p>\n One of the benefits of the pop-up camera is that it allows an unbroken screen, something Honor has taken advantage of with the 9X Pro.<\/p>\n This device has a 2340 x 1080 resolution LCD screen, with a 91% screen-to-body ratio. God, I love a phone without a notch.<\/p>\n Glad you asked!<\/p>\n The Honor 9X Pro improves on previous generations chipset (a Kirin\u00a0710F) with\u00a0a Kirin 810 \u2014 a solid mid-range bit of hardware, even though the company itself refers to it as flagship.<\/p>\n Storage-wise, it comes with 256GB and has an expandable slot that can deal with another 512GB. On top of this, the Honor 9X Pro also has 6GB RAM \u2014 more than enough for most people.<\/p>\n Well, it comes in two colors: Midnight Black and Phantom Purple. Both of them are rather fetching.<\/p>\n It has a 4,000mAh battery and has a USB-C connection. Unfortunately, there\u2019s no fast-charging support. Which sucks.<\/p>\n Oh \u2014 and how could we forget the cost? The Honor 9X Pro will retail for\u00a0\u20ac249 (around $270) and will arrive in Europe in March. That\u2019s a damn alluring price for what you get.<\/p>\n First things first, in my short time with the Honor 9X Pro it wasn\u2019t a million miles away from its preceding device. It felt about the same size and weight, which is what you\u2019d expect from an upgrade like this.<\/p>\n We\u2019re talking about evolution here, not revolution.<\/p>\n That said, there have been enough under-the-hood updates that there should<\/em> be a substantial speed increase while in use. But how noticeable this will be in day-to-day use is questionable.<\/p>\n Another new feature I found fascinating was the location of the fingerprint scanner. In the Honor 9X Pro, it\u2019s positioned on the side of the phone and is \u2014 to me at least \u2014 a far more natural way of unlocking your mobile than having the scanner on the rear.<\/p>\n I think the biggest change though are the lack of Google apps on the phone. While previous handsets had the standard Google suite (Maps, Gmail, etc.), the 9X Pro comes with a Huawei set instead \u2014 for obvious reasons.<\/p>\n Now, I haven\u2019t really spent much time with these apps, but I can\u2019t imagine they\u2019d match Google\u2019s offerings in terms of quality. Still, they can only improve over time, but it\u2019s a big loss. Not having the apps the majority of us have used daily for many years now is a big blow.<\/p>\n From a hardware perspective, Honor\u2018s 9X Pro is an undeniably good deal. It\u2019s powerful, has a great camera set-up, all for a reasonable price. The issue is going to be how it manages without Google apps \u2014 something that will rely on a lot of investment by Huawei. And time.<\/p>\n How much this will impact you depends on how central Google apps are to your life. I can\u2019t wait to put the device through its paces and see how it holds up in this light.
