The program, aptly named JPEG AI, was launched last year; with a special group to study neural-network-based image codecs.<\/p>\n<p><em>[Read \u2014 Study: AI expert Gary Marcus explains how to take AI to \u2018the next level\u2019]<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span>Under the program, it aims to find possible solutions towards finding a new standard<\/span>. To do that, it has partnered with IEEE (<span>Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers)<\/span> to call for papers under the\u00a0<span>Learning-based Image Coding Challenge.\u00a0<\/span>These papers will be presented at the International Conference of Image Processing (ICIP) scheduled to be held at Abu Dhabi in October.<\/p>\n<p>The committee said it wants to find proof that AI can do a better job of achieving better compression with large image databases:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>This activity aims to find evidence for image coding technologies that offer substantially better compression efficiency when compared to conventional approaches but relying on models exploiting a large image database.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span> Having AI models help in attempts to deliver high-quality media with data efficiency in mind isn\u2019t entirely new<\/span>. In 2017, Netflix developed a new AI-powered codec for emerging markets such as India, where people watch a lot of content on their phones through data networks.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, researchers have presented several papers on image compression through machine learning models.
