The coronavirus Covid-19 could reach its \u201cpeak\u201d in a matter of days, research suggests.<\/p>\n

Scientists from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) predict if the virus carries on spreading as it has in the Chinese city Wuhan, the epicentre of the outbreak, it may peak in \u201cmid-to-late February\u201d.<\/p>\n

While other experts are \u201chopeful\u201d this will ring true, they stress no one can guarantee how Covid-19 will play out.<\/p>\n

Since emerging at a seafood and live animal market at the end of last year, the virus has spread to at least 27 countries.<\/p>\n

Authorities have confirmed more than 45,000 cases, of which 44,687 are in mainland China, according to John Hopkins University.<\/p>\n

While most suffer flu-like symptoms, severe cases develop pneumonia, with the death toll exceeding 1,000 on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Could the new coronavirus Covid-19 \u2018peak\u2019 in February?<\/h3>\n

To uncover how the outbreak may progress, the LSHTM scientists developed a mathematical model based on \u201cinternational exported cases from Wuhan\u201d and in the city itself.<\/p>\n

They assumed the \u201cchance of cases being exported\u201d depended on the number in Wuhan, the number of outbound travellers before it \u201clocked down\u201d on 23 January and the \u201crelative connectivity of different countries\u201d.<\/p>\n

Before travel restrictions were in place, the scientists estimate Covid-19\u2019s reproduction number fluctuated between 1.5 and 4.5.<\/p>\n

This is the number of people an infected person goes onto infect.<\/p>\n

A reproduction number of two would mean every patient is expected to pass the virus to two others.<\/p>\n

If this \u201ccontinues to vary as it has in Wuhan\u201d, the scientists \u201cproject the outbreak would peak in mid-to-late February\u201d as a result of \u201csusceptibility declining to the point where transmission cannot be sustained\u201d.<\/p>\n

The scientists stress this has \u201csubstantial uncertainty\u201d, with predictions improving in the \u201ccoming days\u201d as more data emerges.<\/p>\n

Speaking in response, Professor Rowland Kao \u2013 from the University of Edinburgh \u2013 said: \u201cThis is an analysis by an experienced and talented team, but as always limitations of the available data will affect predictions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe predictions for the outbreak peaking in Wuhan implies that, by whatever means, the number of new cases will start to decline \u2013 it does not imply the disease is necessarily under control.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf previously unexposed populations become infected, the outbreak could start rising again.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne thing to keep in mind is this is primarily based on data from Wuhan; the estimates for other countries are only for the import of cases, and thus worldwide estimates of decline are not made \u2013 they would likely contain substantially greater uncertainty.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cIn particular, in countries where no or few cases are reported, under-reporting may be a factor.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlso, in areas where the infrastructure for detecting and controlling the disease is less well developed, the reproduction rate of the disease could be substantially influenced by non-biological factors, such as how effective quarantine strategies may be\u201d.<\/p>\n

Another expert was optimistic, but wary.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope the peak of the outbreak in Wuhan is coming soon\u201d, said Dr Robin Thompson from the University of Oxford.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne proviso must be forecasting the peak of any outbreak is challenging, and so there is significant uncertainty in estimates of both the timing of the peak and the total number of cases that will occur.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dr Michael Head, from the University of Southampton, told Yahoo UK: \u201cModellers have to work with limited data to make predictions and are subject to continuous revision as the outbreak continues.<\/p>\n

\u201cTheir estimates of a late-February peak, from a pragmatic perspective, are plausible.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, as the authors highlight, there are many caveats to their estimates that are reflective of the continuing uncertainties\u201d.<\/p>\n
