Eminem rarely does interviews, and a conversation about last night\u2019s surprise performance of \u201cLose Yourself\u201d at the Academy Awards \u2014 some 17 years after the song won him an Oscar \u2014 would seem rarer still. The performance in many ways was a belated do-over: He\u2019d decided not to attend the ceremony in 2003, leaving his collaborator Luis Resto to accept the award \u2014 from Barbra Streisand, no less \u2014 in his place.<\/p>\n

Last night\u2019s appearance \u2014 which immediately followed a montage celebrating the sound editing\/mixing award, which wound down with footage from \u201c8 Mile\u201d \u2014 got a rapturous reaction from many screen stars in the crowd. Some of the relatively younger ones were seen singing along, and everyone from Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio to Billie Eilish and Anthony Ramos standing and applauding at the end.<\/p>\n

Eminem (real name: Marshall Mathers) has made a habit out of surprises in recent years. His last two albums, last month\u2019s \u201cMusic to Be Murdered By\u201d and 2018\u2019s \u201cKamikaze,\u201d were both surprise releases, and last night\u2019s appearance was a tightly kept secret: Sources say the Dolby Theater was put on lockdown during rehearsals, and that if news leaked to the media, he had the option to cancel.<\/p>\n

But it all came off without a hitch, and Eminem got on the phone with Variety<\/em> this afternoon to talk about how it came together, why he decided not to attend the ceremony in 2003 \u2014 and what he was actually doing that night 17 years ago.<\/p>\n

Last night\u2019s performance certainly was a surprise \u2014 how did it all come together, and why this year?<\/strong>
I kinda figured maybe since I didn\u2019t get a chance to do it at the time, maybe it would be cool. Back then, I never even thought that I had a chance to win, and we had just performed \u201cLose Yourself\u201d on the Grammys with the Roots a couple of weeks before the Oscars, so we didn\u2019t think it was a good idea. And also, back at that time, the younger me didn\u2019t really feel like a show like that would understand me.<\/p>\n

But then when I found out I won, \u201cThat\u2019s crazy!\u201d That to me shows how authentic and real that award is \u2014 when you don\u2019t show up and you still win. That makes it very real to me.<\/p>\n

Were you disappointed that you missed it?
<\/strong>I don\u2019t know that I was disappointed, I was blown back by the fact that I won. I don\u2019t even think I understood back then that you could get an Oscar for a song, and I remember being kinda confused about why I was even up for one, because as a kid with the Oscars, it was like a vacuum.<\/p>\n

It would have been amazing to see you accept an Oscar from Barbra Streisand.
<\/strong>Yeah, that would have been crazy.<\/p>\n

So what did you end up doing that night?
<\/strong>I think I was just at home with my daughter \u2014 and I didn\u2019t watch it, either. At that point in time Hailie had to be at school early in the morning, so [I was sleeping].<\/p>\n

Luis Resto, my keyboard player who produces records with me, went up and accepted it \u2014 and I know people were probably like, \u201cWho the f\u2014 is this guy?\u201d So he called me, and I remember the phone kept ringing, and I\u2019m like \u201cMotherf\u2014, I\u2019m tryin\u2019 to sleep!\u201d But [I answered] and he\u2019s like \u201cHey man, you won!\u201d \u201cI did? Sh\u2013! Cool!\u201d But that was a different time and I was in a different place in my life.<\/p>\n

At the time some reports said you didn\u2019t perform because the Oscars wanted you to do a censored version of the song?
<\/strong>Oh no, that wasn\u2019t the case at all, because there\u2019s not even that many cuss words in it \u2014 there\u2019s only a couple. That\u2019s not true at all.<\/p>\n

But they did make an offer?
<\/strong>I think they did \u2014 yes, [longtime manager Paul Rosenberg] just said they did. He just said they even discussed having someone else perform it, because back then every nominated song had a performer.<\/p>\n

Do you know who they were talking about having perform it?
<\/strong>[Asks Rosenberg<\/em>] No, I don\u2019t think it ever got off the ground.<\/p>\n

Is there anyone you think would have been good?
<\/strong>I\u2019d have to think about that one, I don\u2019t have any idea. It probably would have been weird to have someone else do it.<\/p>\n

Maybe 50 Cent, who you mentored and whose major-label debut had just come out at the time?
<\/strong>Oh sh\u2013! Back then, if 50 was willing to do it, that\u2019d have been cool\u2026 although it\u2019s not really his style of song. Plus, it\u2019s personal.<\/p>\n
