{"id":199920,"date":"2020-02-09T11:03:53","date_gmt":"2020-02-09T08:03:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ww-vb.mine.nu\/w108\/coronavirus-cases-on-diamond-princess-cruise-ship-rise-to-69-including-12-from-u-s\/"},"modified":"2020-02-09T11:03:53","modified_gmt":"2020-02-09T08:03:53","slug":"coronavirus-cases-on-diamond-princess-cruise-ship-rise-to-69-including-12-from-u-s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hameed.nwar.uk\/sa\/coronavirus-cases-on-diamond-princess-cruise-ship-rise-to-69-including-12-from-u-s\/","title":{"rendered":"Coronavirus cases on Diamond Princess cruise ship rise to 69, including 12 from U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Six more passengers, including\u00a0another American,\u00a0have fallen ill on the Diamond Princess cruise ship that is quarantined\u00a0off the coast of Japan, bringing the ship&#8217;s total to 69 passengers who have been diagnosed with coronavirus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The nationalities of the newly diagnosed passengers have not been revealed to Princess Cruises representatives, public relations director Negin Kamali told USA TODAY late Saturday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The cruise ship is one of several\u00a0affected by the deadly coronavirus outbreak, which\u00a0has prompted cruise lines to issue quarantines and perform testings and screenings. Meanwhile,\u00a0some ports are denying cruise ships entry for fear of the virus spreading.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The coronavirus, which was first identified in Wuhan, China, has\u00a0spread across the globe with\u00a0more than 34,963\u00a0confirmed cases and 725\u00a0deaths\u00a0as of Saturday evening. The majority of the cases are in mainland China.\u00a0Common signs of\u00a0infection include fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.<\/p>\n<p>The first American has died in China, the U.S. embassy in Beijing reported Saturday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday evening, Princess Cruises said 63\u00a0people had been diagnosed with coronavirus on board the cruise line&#8217;s\u00a0Diamond Princess\u00a0off the coast of\u00a0Yokohoma, Japan. Twelve of those passengers are Americans, the cruise line said. The ship is under quarantine until Feb. 19.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the ship is out to sea for a 24-hour period to produce fresh water.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong>The new\u00a0coronavirus could become a pandemic: <\/strong>What is that? Should I be worried?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Holland America ship gets preliminary approval for new disembarkation port<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, Holland America&#8217;s MS Westerdam cruise ship is one step closer to disembarkation this week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can confirm that we have received preliminary approval for a port of disembarkation next week,&#8221; the cruise line confirmed in a statement provided by\u00a0Erik Elvejord, its director of public relations, though it did not name the location.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><button class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp caas-button collapse-button\" aria-label=\"\" title=\"\" data-ylk=\"g:dd90b9f4-a8eb-30bd-b0d7-b14f791361f7;elm:readmore;slk:Story continues\">Story continues<\/button><\/p>\n<p>However, before we receive final confirmation, we are required to do a complete passport review of all guests and crew in order to ensure that no one has traveled in mainland China in the past 14 days,&#8221; it continued.\u00a0&#8220;We know that our guests are anxious for a port confirmation, as are we.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Westerdam, which has 1,455 guests and 802 crew members, made a stop in Hong Kong last week. It was subsequently was\u00a0denied entry\u00a0to ports in Guam, the Philippines and Japan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Holland America said the ship was sailing on a southwesterly course in the South China Sea. According to the ship-tracking website VesselFinder.com, it\u00a0is currently off the west coast of Luzon Island in the\u00a0Philippines as of Saturday evening.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong>Coronavirus, explained: <\/strong>Everything you need to know about the deadly virus alarming the world<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The ship has enough fuel to last until the end of the voyage, which was supposed to end Feb. 15<\/p>\n<p>There are no known cases of coronavirus on board despite reports to the contrary, the cruise line said, and the MS Westerdam is not in quarantine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have no reason to believe there are cases of coronavirus on board,&#8221; Elvejord said in an email Friday morning.<\/p>\n<p><span>World Dream <\/span><span>passengers, crew to remain onboard until at least Tuesday<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dream Cruises&#8217;\u00a0World Dream\u00a0was also under quarantine\u00a0Saturday near Hong Kong and had completed testing on 35 crew members and nine passengers for coronavirus \u2014\u00a0all of which came back negative, Dream Cruises said in a statement Saturday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Health officials\u00a0later\u00a0requested testing for the remaining crew\u00a0members but\u00a0results will not be available until at least Tuesday.\u00a0All crew and passengers will remain onboard until those results come back.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime,\u00a0Dream Cruises has taken some measures to make passengers more comfortable, including relocating some from inside cabins or sea view cabins to suites with balconies to provide better air flow.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Royal Caribbean ship cleared to depart Bayonne, New Jersey<\/h2>\n<p>Another ship impacted by the coronavirus is\u00a0Royal Caribbean&#8217;s Anthem of the Seas, which is\u00a0docked in Bayonne,\u00a0New Jersey, where four passengers were sent to a hospital to be tested Friday. The cruise line\u00a0said\u00a0they did not show symptoms of coronavirus and the ship had\u00a0been cleared to depart.<\/p>\n<p>However, the ship&#8217;s departure has been delayed twice as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducts additional tests. The ship\u00a0is expected to depart Monday afternoon and has been changed from a Bahamas cruise to a Bermuda cruise, in light of the delayed departure.<\/p>\n<p>Passengers who do not want to reembark on the cruise will receive a refund from Royal Caribbean, the cruise line said. Passengers choosing to embark on the cruise will receive a\u00a050% refund and\u00a0a 50% future cruise credit,\u00a0Royal Caribbean announced Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Costa Smeralda, one of Costa Cruises&#8217; ships, had a coronavirus scare\u00a0at the end of January that locked down the ship for almost a day in\u00a0Civitavecchia, Italy.\u00a0The scare turned\u00a0out to be a case of the flu.<\/p>\n<h2>Cruise industry bolstering coronavirus screening, some ships ban China, Hong Kong passport holders<\/h2>\n<p>Norwegian and Royal Caribbean International cruise lines announced Friday they\u00a0would bar passengers holding passports from China, Hong Kong or Macau.<\/p>\n<p>Royal Caribbean listed new health screening protocols on its\u00a0website Friday, noting &#8220;these steps are intentionally conservative, and we apologize that they will inconvenience some of our guests.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This protocols included, &#8220;all holders of China, Hong Kong and Macau passports, regardless of residency.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Norwegian Cruise Lines updated its\u00a0coronavirus procedure Friday, also stating that\u00a0&#8220;any guest that holds a Chinese, Hong Kong, or Macau passport, will be unable to board any of our ships, regardless of residency.&#8221; This ban extended to crew members as well.<\/p>\n<p>Cruise Lines International Association, an industry group representing most of the ocean-going cruise ships around the globe, said Friday\u00a0its members would\u00a0restrict boarding access to anyone who may have come in contact with coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>Member ships will deny boarding\u00a0to anyone who has been in close contact\u00a0with or helped to\u00a0care\u00a0for someone suspected or diagnosed with coronavirus. Those\u00a0who are being monitored for potential exposure to the virus are also to be turned away.<\/p>\n<p>Ships are also to deny boarding to all who have traveled from, visited or been through airports in China, the epicenter of the outbreak,\u00a0within a two-week period prior to embarkation. That includes\u00a0Hong Kong and Macao in addition to mainland China.<\/p>\n<p>CLIA cruise member ships\u00a0are to conduct screening before boarding.
