Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell urged Senate lawmakers to reject hardline partisanship in an impassioned last word prior to the vote on two articles of impeachment against President Trump.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe simply cannot let factional fever break our institutions,\u201d said the Kentucky Republican in an address on the chamber floor. \u201cThe institutions must break the fever.<\/p>\n
\u201cI hope we will look back on this vote and say this was the day the fever began to break.\u201d<\/p>\n
The articles of impeachment \u2014 alleging abuse of power and obstruction of Congress \u2014 reached the Senate following a December vote nearly entirely along party lines in the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives.<\/span><\/p>\n In turn, Trump was acquitted on both counts Wednesday in the Republican-controlled Senate.<\/p>\n Despite his hopes for an end to strict party division, McConnell offered a dire prediction Wednesday that the bad will would persist.<\/p>\n He particularly targeted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) who at the conclusion of Trump\u2019s State of the Union address on Tuesday night made a spectacle of shredding a copy of the speech.<\/p>\n \u201cPerhaps she will tear up the [impeachment] verdict like she tore up the State of the Union address,\u201d said McConnell, a slight smirk crossing his face.<\/p>\n \u201cThere is no sign this attack on our institution will end here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
