How\u2019s the idea of an \u201cAmazon Dating\u201d site strike you? Are you horrified? Intrigued? Resigned? Well don\u2019t worry (or get too excited), it\u2019s a joke\u2026 at least, for now.<\/p>\n

An Amazon Dating site cropped up this week, and it looks almost exactly like you\u2019d imagine such a site would look like were it actually Bezos\u2019s company making it. Its GUI looks almost exactly like that of Amazon\u2018s desktop site, with the smorgasbord of products replaced with smiling human faces.<\/p>\n

As satire goes, this one is pretty elaborate. Every potential paramour comes complete with a price and reviews. You can select them by height and love language (\u201cacts of service,\u201d or \u201cphysical touch\u201d). It\u2019ll no doubt give you a smile if you\u2019re just glancing at it, but once you look at it for a few minutes, it starts to look pretty damned creepy.<\/p>\n

It was created by\u00a0Ani Acopian, Suzy Shinn, Morgan Gruer, and Thinko. The latter is an animation studio that\u2019s done other parody sites before, such as ScamDaddy and WhoPaid99Cents. It\u2019s already a hit on the internet, as you might expect. Someone\u2019s already done an \u201cunboxing\u201d of one of their dates:<\/p>\n

I wasn\u2019t feeling truly uncomfortable until I saw the \u201cBest Seller\u201d tag above Amy\u2019s picture. Intellectually, I know it\u2019s amusing, but my visceral reaction when I see the capitalist commodification of human romance taken to the logical extreme was horror. As in, this\u00a0would\u00a0<\/em>be funny if it didn\u2019t also feel like, um, the future.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m exaggerating, of course, but Facebook\u2019s already put its hat into the dating ring, despite the fact that it\u2019s blatantly unsuited to the inducement of healthy human romance \u2014 I don\u2019t need to think about what it\u2019d look like if Amazon decided to do the same thing. I guess the only thing I can take comfort in is that Thinko et al. was able to buy the domain name, so that means Amazon cares little enough about the concept that it didn\u2019t do so itself.<\/p>\n
