But it barely touches the surface of what drives Vanderbilt standout\u00a0Abbey\u00a0Carlson.<\/p>\n<p>Carlson, who recently earned an invitation into the Augusta National Women\u2019s Amateur this April, is arguably America\u2019s most interesting women\u2019s golfer.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Abbey Carlson: Engineer and Golfer\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ubm-731801I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Carlson possesses a truly remarkable resume. On the links, she\u2019s one of Vanderbilt\u2019s leading performers, a two-time All-Southeastern Conference honoree and Mason Rudolph Championship individual medalist who has helped guide the Commodores to back-to-back NCAA appearances and represented the United States in Palmer Cup international competition. Away from the course, she\u2019s a licensed pilot, airplane and rocket builder, aerospace enthusiast and engineering major.<\/p>\n<p>Carlson\u2019s array of interests amazes Vanderbilt women\u2019s golf head coach Greg Allen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbbey\u00a0never fails to amaze me. She\u2019s just a remarkable young lady and she\u2019s been that way since our first introduction,\u201d Allen said. \u201cIt\u2019s fun to watch how she\u2019s handled her athletic responsibilities with the academic rigor at Vanderbilt and her other interests. I\u2019ll have a lot of fun simply watching where life takes her into the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Allen started the recruiting process, he quickly discovered Carlson was more than an elite golfer. She was knee-deep in aviation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbbey\u00a0had a pilot\u2019s license as a high school junior and was flying a plane that she and other students at her school had built,\u201d Allen said. \u201cIt quickly became obvious that\u00a0Abbey\u00a0wasn\u2019t your typical junior golfer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The combination of Vanderbilt\u2019s nationally-regarded golf program and highly-respected engineering school enticed Carlson to West End. Since arriving on campus, Carlson\u2019s blossomed in the classroom and on the course while widening her interest in space.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Carlson joined other undergraduates with the Vanderbilt Aerospace Design Lab to create, build and launch their own rocket in conjunction with NASA. During the summer, she added to her aerospace experience with an internship at Boeing.<\/p>\n<p>This spring, Carlson will complete a degree in mechanical engineering and hopes to cap her athletic career by leading the Commodores to another appearance at the NCAA Championships.<\/p>\n<p>When Carlson is done with collegiate golf, she will join Boeing\u2019s north Alabama facility as an advanced design engineer.<\/p>\n<p>But for now, she\u2019s focused on birdies on the course and books in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>Carlson will be joined by Vanderbilt sophomore Auston Kim in the prestigious Augusta National Women\u2019s Amateur, scheduled April 1-4 in Augusta, Georgia.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tiled-gallery type-rectangular tiled-gallery-unresized\" data-original-width=\"795\" data-carousel-extra=\"{&quot;blog_id&quot;:1,&quot;permalink&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/news.vanderbilt.edu\/2020\/01\/31\/abbey-carlson-engineer-and-golfer\/&quot;,&quot;likes_blog_id&quot;:124672413}\" itemscope=\"\" itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageGallery\">\n<div class=\"gallery-row\" style=\"width: 795px;
