{"id":196067,"date":"2020-01-31T12:10:50","date_gmt":"2020-01-31T09:10:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ww-vb.mine.nu\/w108\/tinder-and-bumble-under-investigation-over-underage-use-sex-offenders-and-data-handling\/"},"modified":"2020-01-31T12:10:50","modified_gmt":"2020-01-31T09:10:50","slug":"tinder-and-bumble-under-investigation-over-underage-use-sex-offenders-and-data-handling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hameed.nwar.uk\/sa\/tinder-and-bumble-under-investigation-over-underage-use-sex-offenders-and-data-handling\/","title":{"rendered":"Tinder and Bumble under investigation over underage use, sex offenders, and data handling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2020\/01\/Copy-of-Copy-of-Copy-of-Copy-of-...-2-1-796x417.png\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yesterday, the US House Oversight and Reform subcommittee announced an investigation into popular dating apps including Tinder, Grindr, and Bumble for allegedly allowing minors and convicted sex offenders to use their services.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a press release issued yesterday, the Chairman of the subcommittee, Raja Krishnamoorthi, sent letters to Match Group, Inc \u2014 the parent company of major dating apps \u2014 seeking information related to recent reports that numerous dating apps have failed to effectively screen out underage users, \u201cwhich creates dangerous and inappropriate situations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dating services will have to hand over information on the age of its users, the procedure it takes to verify ages, and any complaints raised by users regarding assault, rape, or use by minors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[Read: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Report: Tinder\u2019s new panic button is sharing your data with Facebook and YouTube<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur concern about the underage use of dating apps is heightened by reports that many popular free dating apps permit registered sex offenders to use them, while the paid versions of these same apps screen out registered sex offenders,\u201d Krishnamoorthi wrote. \u201cProtection from sexual predators should not be a luxury confined to paying customers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report Krishnamoorthi is referring to is an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">investigation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by ProPublica, BuzzFeed, and Columbia Journalism Investigations last year. They found that more than 150 instances of sexual assault involving dating apps, and approximately 10 percent involved users being matched with dates who had previously been accused or convicted of sexual assault.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time of the report, a Match Group spokesperson called the report \u201cdisingenuous\u201d and \u201cinaccurate,\u201d though declined to comment on any specific facts reported in the story. However, the statement did say that Match Group didn\u2019t collect enough data on its free users to conduct meaningful background checks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs technology evolves, we will continue to aggressively deploy new tools to eradicate bad actors, including users of our free products like Tinder, Plenty of Fish, and OkCupid where we are not able to obtain sufficient and reliable information to make meaningful background checks possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a statement to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Match Group said the US national sex offender registry needs to be updated so perpetrators\u2019 digital footprints can be tracked and blocked by social media and dating services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As well as sharing information on its users\u2019 ages, the investigated dating apps have been asked to share its privacy policies along with its terms and conditions and how the company handles\u00a0 collected user data including sexual orientation and political views, among others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn\u2019t the only controversy facing dating apps at the moment.
