At least, that\u2019s what Jack Dorsey says in a new\u00a0<em>Wired<\/em> video.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Twitter Co-Founder Jack Dorsey Answers Twitter Questions From Twitter | Tech Support | WIRED\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/de8wRd2TQQU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Dorsey answers several questions from Twitter users in the video, and inevitably someone asks whether we\u2019ll get an edit button in 2020. \u201cThe answer is no,\u201d says Dorsey in a matter-of-factly manner.<\/p>\n<p>Dorsey then goes on to explain some of the reasoning behind the decision. He notes that Twitter started out as an SMS service and \u201cwhen you send a text, you can\u2019t really take it back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He then presents the common argument that someone could edit a tweet after it\u2019s gained popularity, changing the context of replies and retweets. It\u2019s not like the company hasn\u2019t seriously thought about edits though, as Dorsey notes Twitter has considered imposing a brief delay before sending the tweet \u2013 30 seconds to a minute \u2013 to allow you to edit things like typos and broken links. Gmail\u2019s \u2018Undo\u2019 button comes to mind.<\/p>\n<p>This could pose a bit of a problem for live-tweeting events and the like, but it\u2019s probably the safest way to go about edits. You might not think 30 seconds is much time, but someone with a large following could spread a lot of misinformation in that time. A small delay before the tweet actually goes out seems like a decent compromise for typos and the like.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we\u2019ll probably never do it, \u201d says Dorsey, with such an inscrutable expression and deadpan delivery that I can\u2019t quite tell if it\u2019s sarcasm or resolute indifference.<\/p>\n<p>You can watch the rest of the video over at <em>Wired<\/em>, where Dorsey addresses a number of other questions and concerns, including how Twitter handles your media and typos in hashtags.
