Gwyneth Paltrow is taking her controversial lifestyle brand Goop to the silver screen with a Netflix series confirmed for January 24th.<\/p>\n
\u2018Goop Lab\u2019 will explore alternative medical practices \u2013 some of which are unregulated, as one woman admits in the trailer.<\/p>\n
Already a divisive brand thanks to certain unsubstantiated sexual health practices, Gwyneth has recommended in the past, the latest news has predictably unleashed a tidal wave of pushback online.<\/p>\n
Among everything cited by irate medical practitioners and citizens alike, there is one troubling detail in the announcement which has stolen the show.<\/p>\n
Namely, the advertisement which one fan dubbed \u2018the vagina poster\u2019.<\/p>\n\nGwyneth Paltrow’s new poster has raised eyebrows. Photo: Netflix<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>More<\/span><\/button><\/div>\n<\/figure>\nShared to Twitter by Netflix, the poster shows Gwyneth smiling serenely in the middle of a pattern in various shades of pink which does remind the viewer a hell of a lot of, well, a vagina.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat\u2019s going on with this pic? Is she supposed to be a jade egg? Or maybe some mugwort steam?\u201d one witty onlooker wondered, referring to the jade \u2018Yoni Eggs\u2019 the site recommended be inserted into the vagina.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy is she in a vagina?\u201d another wondered.<\/p>\n
\u201cWho designed this poster?\u201d was another\u2019s takeaway.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a question that makes perfect sense given Gwyn\u2019s history with vagina-related advice.<\/p>\n

Photo: Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/figcaption>More<\/span><\/button><\/div>\n<\/figure>\nGoop has faced criticism in the past over its support of controversial treatments, most infamously the recommendations that \u2018jade eggs\u2019 and vaginal steaming promote vaginal health.<\/p>\n
The articles resulted in the company paying a settlement over misleading claims and accusations of promoting pseudo-science.<\/p>\n
In the finding, the District Attorney at the time, Tony Rackauckas slammed Goop\u2019s offending products as \u2018snake oil\u2019.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople have been selling snake oil for a long time. This is just another type of snake oil,\u201d the lawyer\u00a0told CBS News.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The items have since been renamed and offending claims removed.<\/p>\n
While Jade Eggs are no longer for sale on the site, a\u00a0\u2018VFit Intimate Wellness Solution\u2019, a device that seems to be a heated vibrator, is available.<\/p>\n
The device is described as \u2018using red light and gentle warmth to stimulate blood flow and promote intimate well-being\u201d with the vibration an added bonus.<\/p>\n
Oh, and it will set you back over $700, no returns accepted, though in this case,\u00a0at least one scientific study\u00a0has cleared the device for use.<\/p>\n
The site continues to attract pushback from individual members of the medical community, who have spoken out in the past.<\/p>\n

Dr Jen Gunter, an OB\/GYN, and other medical professionals have spoken out against the practices the company was originally slammed for.<\/p>\n
Dr Gunter slammed the site in many articles, most notably labelling it a\u00a0\u201cscare factory.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr Anna McNulty, Director of\u00a0Sydney Sexual Health, responded to the 2015 vaginal steaming claim telling\u00a0The Sydney Morning Herald<\/em>, <\/em>“your vagina is very good at keeping itself healthy. In\u00a0an appearance on CNBC\u2019s\u00a0Power Lunch<\/em>\u00a0on Monday, the Oscar winner defended seeking out \u201calternative ways of healing\u201d that may help women who feel overlooked by modern medicine.<\/p>\n\u201cLook, well, I think when we were a little start-up and didn\u2019t know about claims and regulatory issues and all, you know, we made a few mistakes back in the early days,\u201d she told CNBC\u2019s Julia Boorstin.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut, you know, for over a year now, we\u2019ve had an incredibly robust and brilliant science and regulatory team in-house. It\u2019s led by an MIT scientist.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the trailer, one of the Goop workers explains their perception on the role of Goop as a lifestyle site.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat we try to do at Goop is to explore ideas that may seem out there or too scary,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n
Netflix users slam show<\/h4>\n It seems for many members of the public, the ideas do remain \u2018too scary\u2019.<\/p>\n
Twitter users are irate and continue to slam Goop, as well as Netflix for taking their unusual ideas to a very public streaming platform.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo. We don\u2019t need snakeoil and health wuwu disinformation given a platform because it\u2019s peddled by a celebrity. Do better.\u00a0#HealthLiteracy<\/a>\u00a0 #ScienceRules<\/a>,\u201d one woman wrote.<\/p>\n\u201cIs she going to discuss the harmful suggestions & ideas about vaginas she gives to women?\u201d another wondered.<\/p>\n
Some even threatened to pull out of the streaming service.<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah, this might make me cancel my Netflix. Has Dr Jen Gunter seen this? Can she have a show instead? Please?\u201d one woman wrote.<\/p>\n
