Microsoft has invested $1 billion in Elon Musk-founded (Musk has since departed<\/a>)\u00a0artificial intelligence company<\/a> OpenAI in an effort build supercomputer AI technologies for its Azure cloud services.<\/p>\n The two companies will join forces to build large-scale AI systems for Azure. The end goal? Developing artificial general intelligence (AGI), another term for autonomous computers that can see the world and solve tasks the same way humans do \u2013 basically, what we always wanted \u2018AI\u2018 to be.<\/p>\n As part of the deal, OpenAI \u2013 which has previously leveraged its technology to annihilate gamers<\/a>, predict language<\/a>, and generate coherent blocks of text from a single phrase<\/a> \u2013 will also exclusively run its computing\u00a0efforts in Microsoft\u2019s cloud.<\/p>\n \u201cThe companies will focus on building a computational platform in Azure of unprecedented scale, which will train and run increasingly advanced AI models, include hardware technologies that build on Microsoft\u2019s supercomputing technology,\u201d Microsoft wrote in a press release.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cModern AI systems work well for the specific problem on which they\u2019ve been trained, but getting AI systems to help address some of the hardest problems facing the world today will require generalization and deep mastery of multiple AI technologies,\u201d it continued.<\/span><\/p>\n Among other things, the two companies hope its technology can help solve looming challenges like climate change, education, and healthcare. Ambitious, but we\u2019ve yet to see whether this collaboration can deliver on its promises.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
