{"id":141457,"date":"2019-07-21T17:34:10","date_gmt":"2019-07-21T14:34:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ww-vb.mine.nu\/w108\/i-am-vanderbilt-jonathan-ertelt-vanderbilt-news\/"},"modified":"2019-07-21T17:34:10","modified_gmt":"2019-07-21T14:34:10","slug":"i-am-vanderbilt-jonathan-ertelt-vanderbilt-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hameed.nwar.uk\/sa\/i-am-vanderbilt-jonathan-ertelt-vanderbilt-news\/","title":{"rendered":"I Am Vanderbilt: Jonathan Ertelt | Vanderbilt News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Video by Zack Eagles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>I Am Vanderbilt\u00a0celebrates the people of Vanderbilt and the unique talents and contributions they bring to their work at the university each day.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>High atop Vanderbilt\u2019s Stevenson Center II, throughout seven climate-controlled rooms, one can find some 1,500 unique plant species as well as various insects, frogs and\u2014coming soon\u2014an observational beehive.<\/p>\n<p>The Vanderbilt greenhouses are a lush, light-filled retreat in the heart of campus, and Jonathan Ertelt is charged with ensuring that each of their inhabitants thrives.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"795\" height=\"447\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/e0bY53XVwJU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe greenhouses are home to a teaching and display collection, and they\u2019re introducing students who come here to other parts of the world as well as to the world of plants,\u201d said Ertelt, who has served as manager of the greenhouses since 1996 and has more than 40 years\u2019 experience working with plants.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to <a href=\"https:\/\/as.vanderbilt.edu\/biosci\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of Biological Sciences<\/a> faculty who study plant biology and look at plant-animal interactions, the greenhouses attract a diverse array of disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had people from anthropology and English and fine arts who have done work in the greenhouses,\u201d Ertelt said. (John Russell\/Vanderbilt)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s one of the best things about this business\u2014as soon as you get something that\u2019s really rare, generally the first thing most people do is cut it in half and give it to someone else,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt\u2019s a very generous group of people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ertelt enlists a small team of volunteers to help him water the plants seven days a week, as well as with a variety of other tasks, such as planting seeds, grooming and weeding, and transplanting and potting up rooted cuttings. Interacting with these students is the best part of his job, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve worked with plants for more than 40 years now, and I still love working with the plants, without a doubt,\u201d he said. \u201cBut sharing some of what I know with the students, as well as encouraging them to think about why they\u2019re here at Vanderbilt \u2026 it\u2019s the best aspect of what this institution is\u2014a learning, liberal arts institution.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cSharing some of what I know with the students, as well as encouraging them to think about why they\u2019re here at Vanderbilt \u2026 it\u2019s the best aspect of what this institution is.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Grace Adcox, a senior political science and Asian studies major from Hendersonville, Tennessee, has volunteered in the greenhouses since her freshman year. She said working with the plants, and Ertelt\u2019s mentorship, have been an integral part of her Vanderbilt experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that one of the most important lessons that I\u2019ve learned in the greenhouses is to practice kindness\u2014to other people, to plants, and to yourself,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is a place where I can get away from stresses and anxieties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What about the plant world has inspired Ertelt to devote his career to them?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlants are why we\u2019re here,\u201d he said. They\u2019re a major part of the planet in terms of the food we eat, the clothes we wear and the products we consume, among other things, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re also a bridge to other cultures, other people,\u201d he said. \u201cThey not only can take you anywhere you want to go as far as a discipline, but they\u2019ve taken me anywhere I\u2019ve wanted to go as far as bridges to other places.
