{"id":126031,"date":"2019-04-06T16:15:28","date_gmt":"2019-04-06T13:15:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ww-vb.mine.nu\/w108\/vanderbilt-students-zeno-power-systems-featured-at-dc-innovation-entrepreneurship-showcase-vanderbilt-news\/"},"modified":"2019-04-06T16:15:28","modified_gmt":"2019-04-06T13:15:28","slug":"vanderbilt-students-zeno-power-systems-featured-at-dc-innovation-entrepreneurship-showcase-vanderbilt-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hameed.nwar.uk\/sa\/vanderbilt-students-zeno-power-systems-featured-at-dc-innovation-entrepreneurship-showcase-vanderbilt-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Vanderbilt students\u2019 Zeno Power Systems featured at DC innovation, entrepreneurship showcase | Vanderbilt News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Vanderbilt University student team behind Zeno Power Systems, a clean energy company that could serve schools and hospitals in remote locations, will discuss their path to entrepreneurship Wednesday, April 10, at The University Innovation and Entrepreneurship Showcase in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities and the Association of American Universities, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aplu.org\/projects-and-initiatives\/economic-development-and-community-engagement\/university-innovation-and-entrepreneurship-showcase\/index.html\">the event<\/a> will spotlight 20 startups from across the nation that created products and services using federally funded, university-based research.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler Bernstein, a junior majoring in computer science; Jonathan Segal, a senior majoring in human and organizational development; Jake Matthews, who earned his master\u2019s in mechanical engineering; and Steven Krahn, professor of the practice of nuclear environmental engineering, launched Zeno Power Systems. (Heidi Hall\/Vanderbilt University)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re using radioisotopes \u2013 a resilient, clean energy source \u2013 in a device no larger than a tabletop that potentially could power even small villages that currently rely on diesel or coal,\u201d said Bernstein, the CEO. \u201cOur device could fuel critical infrastructure for months or years with no maintenance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team completed the National Science Foundation\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/news\/special_reports\/i-corps\/\">National Innovation Corps<\/a>\u00a0program, which provides grant money and entrepreneurship training, and received a Small Business Innovation Research grant and other federal funds.<\/p>\n<p>Bernstein and Segal said Vanderbilt supported their efforts by allowing their internship requirements to be fulfilled through working in their own company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only have we received the education and skills we need to be successful, we\u2019ve also received encouragement and support for entrepreneurship,\u201d Segal said. \u201cThat\u2019s critical to launching a company at the same time as completing a degree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A selection committee comprised of innovation experts chose the showcase\u2019s featured startups based on level of student engagement plus the strength of the technology and its connection to research.<\/p>\n<p>Members of Congress, their staff, and national economic development and innovation policy leaders will attend the showcase to learn the importance of federally funded university research in driving entrepreneurship and the U.S. innovation economy.
