For instance, what would happen if the world suddenly <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/anderssandberg\/status\/1020758566934859783?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">turned into blueberries<\/a>, as answered by physics recently. Or what color is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_dress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">that dress<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>In a similar way, perception scientists have recently been <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kevinmawright\/status\/1097591898737324032\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fighting it out on Twitter<\/a> to answer the seemingly trivial question of: \u201cwhich is the best sense, and why?\u201d. The debate has opened up some surprisingly deep questions \u2013 like what actually makes a sense more or less valuable? And, are some senses fundamentally more important in making us human?<\/p>\n<p>The question was also put to a poll. While most people would probably assume the obvious winner is vision, \u201csomatosensation\u201d \u2013 which we normally refer to as touch but technically incorporates all sensations from our body \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kevinmawright\/status\/1097591898737324032\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">took the day<\/a>. But does this vote hold up when you take a closer look at the scientific evidence?<\/p>\n<h2>Losing your body<\/h2>\n<p>We need somatosensation to move successfully \u2013 seemingly more so than vision. While a big claim, it is arguably backed up by the rare handful of cases where this sense is lost. \u201cDeafferented\u201d patients are individuals who have lost most (or all) touch sensation, as well as the ability to sense the position (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Proprioception\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">proprioception<\/a>) and movement (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.khanacademy.org\/science\/health-and-medicine\/nervous-system-and-sensory-infor\/somatosensation-topic\/v\/proprioception-kinesthesia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">kinesthesia<\/a>) of their limbs. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsmf.org\/meetings\/2007\/oct-nov\/neuroscience%20of%20sensory%20loss%20chp%2007-07-27.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">may occur<\/a> because the body attacks its own somatosensory nerves in post-infection autoimmune reaction, though in most cases the cause is unclear.<\/p>\n<p>While there is <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/brain\/article\/113\/5\/1563\/267667\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">no direct dysfunction<\/a> in the patient\u2019s motor systems, most sufferers cannot complete even the most basic of movements. That\u2019s because the brain must feel the body\u2019s starting position to create the right motor plan, and needs sensory feedback to know if the plan was executed successfully.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these barriers, one patient, dubbed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/sarlegna\/deafferentation---proprioception\/iw-clinical-condition-in-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">IW<\/a>\u201d, shocked medical experts by regaining the ability to walk. He achieved this feat by meticulously planning what muscles to contract, in what order before moving \u2013 then staring at his limbs to track his success. This strategy is highly cognitively demanding, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymotion.com\/video\/x12647t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">not at all the norm<\/a>, with most patients bound to wheelchairs.<\/p>\n<p>Many foodies might think that taste gets their vote for top sense. However, those who have tried eating after dental anaesthetic can attest to the risks and difficulties of eating without somatosensation \u2013 a challenge described by the deafferented patient \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/sarlegna\/deafferentation---proprioception\/gl-in-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">GL<\/a>\u201d in the <a href=\"https:\/\/pdfs.semanticscholar.org\/463f\/e080e3943b8c89302e9417a1b4bb89d63df0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">scientific literature<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another subcomponent of somasensation is the vestibular system, which is critical in <a href=\"https:\/\/vestibular.org\/understanding-vestibular-disorder\/human-balance-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">keeping us upright<\/a>. If you have ever been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.physiology.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1152\/physrev.1970.50.1.1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">motion sick<\/a>, you have a tiny insight into what happens when this critical system goes awry. In short, your eyes tell the brain you are moving, but your vestibular system says you are still \u2013 causing a conflict that can lead to vertigo, nausea and loss of balance.<\/p>\n<p>Pain and temperature perception also get lumped in with somatosensation, failing to fit into any other category. Being born without sensitivity to pain is rare (around <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaneurology\/article-abstract\/565536\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">45<\/a> documented cases) and highly dangerous. Some experts speculate the incidence may actually be largely underestimated, as sufferers don\u2019t survive long enough to be documented. This is because pain tells you something is directly impinging on your body in a <em>bad<\/em> way, and you better react fast. Patients must <a href=\"https:\/\/jmg.bmj.com\/content\/53\/8\/533\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">self-check<\/a> multiple times daily, to prevent infection from cuts they haven\u2019t noticed.<\/p>\n<p>Touch forms a core part of our humanity. It is the first sense to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.physiology.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1152\/physrev.1975.55.3.352\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">develop in a fetus in utero<\/a>, and some suggest the integration of sensations related to the body <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK92870\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">may form the basis<\/a> of our fundamental self consciousness.<\/p>\n<p>The touch of another can also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3944476\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reduce anxiety<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0149763408001723\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">influence our behavior<\/a>, shape <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/touch-in-infancy-is-important-for-healthy-brain-development-74864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">brain development<\/a> and reduce brain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/current-biology\/pdf\/S0960-9822(18)31480-5.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">responses to pain<\/a> in babies. We even have a <a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2007-17707-002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">dedicated set of nerves<\/a> that preferentially process \u201csocial\u201d and \u201cemotional\u201d touch.<\/p>\n<h2>Vision versus touch<\/h2>\n<p>On the other hand, looking from a neuroscience perspective, it is easy to see (no pun intended) why vision almost won the poll. The brain seems to have a vision focus. The primary brain area for processing visual stimuli, the <a href=\"https:\/\/neurology.mhmedical.com\/book.aspx?bookID=1049\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">visual cortex<\/a>, takes up the largest area of any individual sense. Partly because of this vast processing resource, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.physiology.org\/doi\/full\/10.1152\/jn.00654.2015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">vision is the most acute<\/a> sense we have for various kinds of discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>The high reliability of vision means that if there is a conflict between what two senses say, vision will typically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/415429a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">warp our final perception<\/a> to be in line with the visual information. In the famous <a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.google.co.uk\/scholar_url?url=http:\/\/www.nyu.edu\/gsas\/dept\/philo\/courses\/consciousness\/papers\/Botvinick.pdf&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;scisig=AAGBfm1rY0GvgiGvd5UdL-QEP2PDtAqeSQ&amp;nossl=1&amp;oi=scholarr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">rubber hand illusion<\/a>, stroking a realistic dummy hand in front of a person (and hiding their own hand) can make the person feel as if it is their own hand that is being stroked \u2013 with vision hijacking their sense of touch. Similar things happen when you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0896627305008858?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">conflict hearing<\/a> with vision.<\/p>\n<p>Vision also allows reading, writing and art. You can see the faces of your loved ones, or danger coming from far away. But maybe we only think vision is so crucial because it is at the very forefront of our daily experience. As Kevin Wright, an assistant professor of neuroscience at the Oregon Health and Science University, who posted the best sense poll, states \u2013 people may simply perceive the loss of vision as being more life affecting because \u201cwe are more aware of our vision as opposed to our somatosensory function\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2>And the rest\u2026<\/h2>\n<p>So are the other senses really less important? Our sense of smell is incredibly ancient and complex. If order indicates anything, smell is a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/content.openclass.com\/eps\/pearson-reader\/api\/item\/ab914c98-1923-486b-bdb4-b9187be18b9e\/1\/file\/silverthornHP7-071415-MJ-BO\/OPS\/s9ml\/chapter10\/filep7000495934000000000000000003c2d.xhtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">chemoreception<\/a> which is thought to have been the first \u201csense\u201d to evolve in our early multicellular ancestors. Smell is the only sense that bypasses our brain\u2019s sensory relay system \u2013- going <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/neuroscience\/primary-olfactory-cortex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">straight to the cortex<\/a> for processing.<\/p>\n<p>Smell works together with taste to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3342754\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">stop you eating<\/a> spoiled or poisonous foods. Smell is also strongly <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-strange-science-of-odour-memory-74403\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">linked to autobiographical memory<\/a>, therefore forming a core part of the processes that maintain our identity. And hearing is better than both touch and vision for detecting danger coming up behind you. And it is certainly better than vision in the dark. And no hearing, no music. Enough said.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day, somatosensation gets my vote because it keeps me upright, moving and alive \u2013 more so than the others. Looking to the future, however, I am excited to see how <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sensory_substitution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sensory substitution<\/a> technology might upend our assessments of what sense is more or less important. As science reveals, for instance, that with the right device you can learn to see with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/221963a0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">touch<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22208131\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sound<\/a>.<!-- End of code.
