McBride decided to walk the length of the canyon \u2014 about 750 miles \u2014 for weeks at a time between November 2015 and October 2016, during which he suffered four sprained ankles, two broken fingers, lost two girlfriends and even threw his heart out of rhythm, requiring surgery.
