Steinbrenner Field, Boone wasn’t ready to identify Tanaka for the prestigious assignment. Nor was Tanaka willing to address the issue even after admitting he has discussed the topic with manager Aaron Boone.

“I talked with Boonie. I have nothing to say about any of that,’’ Tanaka said after giving up two runs, four hits, allowing a walk and fanning five in 3 ¹/₃ innings.

“Obviously if you are given the opportunity to pitch on that day you want to do your best,’’ Tanaka said. “If you look back I don’t think I have necessarily been good on Opening Day.’’

Tanaka has been terrible working three Opening Days (2015-17). In those starts he is 0-2 with a 9.49 ERA. The Yankees are winless and he has allowed 17 hits and four homers in 12 ¹/₃ innings.

Masahiro TanakaCharles Wenzelberg

Until Luis Severino was diagnosed with an inflamed rotator cuff, the staff ace was a slam dunk to face the Orioles in the opener. Tanaka was likely the second-game starter with James Paxton and J.A. Happ in the mix for the No. 3 and No. 4.

Severino, however, will start the season on the injured list and there is no set date when he will be able to pitch in a big league game. That will be determined by how his shoulder progresses once he is allowed to resume throwing.

Should Boone announce Tanaka as the choice, it would mark the 30-year-old’s fourth Opening Day assignment as a Yankee and that counts. Severino started against the Blue Jays in Toronto last year and posted a 6-1 victory.

In addition to pitching three Opening Day games, Tanaka has started five postseason games for the Yankees and is 3-2 with a 1.50 ERA. That experience can’t hurt when it comes to the big-game atmosphere of Opening Day that quickly vanishes after the final out.

“I’ve got some experience going through the playoffs, so if that situation would arise hopefully go out there and give a good performance,’’ Tanaka said.

Which led to a question about Tanaka’s Opening Day experiences and working well in the postseason would give him an advantage over Happ and Paxson.

“I guess that could play into that a little bit,’’ Boone said. “I feel good handing him the ball in that situation. Masa has clearly shown that he is really good in the big spot. Certainly in an Opening Day situation he won’t flinch at it and he would be prepared.’’

Tanaka was 12-6 with a 3.75 ERA in 27 starts last season and is 64-34 with a 3.59 ERA in 132 starts in the majors — all as a Yankee.

“I like where he is at and where he came in,’’ Boone said. “He was physically really good coming in. I think he has had a good camp so far.’’

In Tanaka’s only previous spring outing, he worked three scoreless innings, allowed a hit, struck out two and didn’t issue a walk to the Tigers on March 3.

After introducing a knuckle curveball toward the end of last season, Tanaka used it in his first outing. He said he believes it will help him the more familiar he gets with it.

“Not the knuckle curve, but the previous curveball I wasn’t able to control it the way I wanted to,’’ said Tanaka, who wasn’t impressed with his slider or signature split-finger fastball. “I wanted something that was more controllable. So far it is working good.’’

[ad_2]

Source link

[ad_1] TAMPA — If life is 6 ½ against, then Masahiro Tanaka is an even-money favorite to be Aaron Boone’s Opening Day pitcher on March 28 at Yankee Stadium against the putrid Orioles.
