Burn This <\/i><\/a>requires one set and four actors. The story and dialogue are true to life. So what did director Michael Mayer<\/a> tell his cast\u2014led by Keri Russell and Adam Driver\u2014on their first day together?<\/p>\n

No, not directing; on the contrary, he\u2019s been quite busy. But the New Wave-meets-Renaissance musical realm of Head Over Heels<\/i><\/a> and the palatial Metropolitan Opera\u2014which recently housed his productions of Marnie <\/i>and La Traviata<\/i>\u2014clearly have a different energy.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy career has been nothing if not eclectic,\u201d Mayer says. \u201cA naturalistic play? I haven\u2019t done one of those in a long time.\u201d But challenge accepted: \u201cChanging the tools that I have to tell stories keeps me on my toes; it keeps me young.\u201d<\/p>\n

This play in particular, beginning previews March 15 at Broadway\u2019s Hudson Theatre, takes him directly to his younger years\u2014back when he first encountered Lanford Wilson\u2019s earlier works as a graduate student at NYU in the \u201980s. Mayer considered the late author \u201cone of the great living American playwrights of the slightly younger generation,\u201d recalling getting lost in such plays as Fifth of July<\/i> and Talley\u2019s Folly. <\/i><\/p>\n

And then came 1987\u2019s Burn This.<\/i><\/p>\n

It was the year of ACT UP. Princess Diana visited an HIV-positive patient. The AIDS Memorial Quilt was displayed for the first time. \u201cThe play captured exactly what New York was like at that moment, as so many people I knew were sick and were dying,\u201d Mayer says. \u201cThis felt like Wilson\u2019s AIDS play.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, HIV and AIDS are never referenced directly. Instead, the play follows two roommates and the estranged brother of a young gay man killed in a boating accident. But Mayer says that though socio-political ramifications may differ, the core feeling was no different: \u201cIt was still this crazy loss of a brilliant, beautiful artist. How do you recover from that?\u201d<\/p>\n

After first being announced for a 2017 bow, Mayer\u2019s production was put on hold. The aforementioned projects kept him occupied, but now he\u2019s ready, and in some ways thankful for the time away from the title. \u201cI came back to it, and it reignited my passion for it. I got excited all over again.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was like an old friend I hadn\u2019t spent enough time with.\u201d<\/p>\n
